Chinese Crypto Traders Remain Confident in Binance Despite Regulatory Woes

5 years 2 months ago

Perhaps reflecting how Binance’s Chinese name “币安” means “safe coins,” many Binance users in China said they aren’t too worried about their funds amid the worsening global crackdown on the world’s biggest crypto exchange by volume.

On the surface, this may seem counter-intuitive. Binance is clearly in the crosshairs of regulators from around the world, having been banned in several countries and facing criminal charges in another. Meanwhile, a recent series of regulatory actions by China against crypto activity has rocked the industry overall and contributed to a plunge in crypto prices.

For Chinese traders, though, Binance is largely viewed as immune to China’s actions, which they see as the biggest threat to exchanges with operations in the country. That’s particularly true given how the nation’s regulators recently brought a company as powerful as Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba to its knees so quickly and harshly.

Binance is considered as relatively safe from this type of action due to the company’s decision to move its operations — and the funds it holds — out of the country back in 2017. This distance from Chinese regulators, combined with trading products available only on Binance, is causing traders to look past the exchange’s issues in other regions and prefer it to rivals with operations or executives still in China.

Related: Binance Pay Bringing Crypto Payments to Shopify, Others

“People are scared of the relentlessness [of the Chinese regulators],” Alex Zuo, vice president of Singapore-based crypto wallet service Cobo, said, referring to an incident involving crypto exchange OKEx last year when it abruptly suspended all account withdrawals for five weeks. “At least Binance’s platform itself has few safety risks.”

OKEx, with deep ties in China, suspended all withdrawal services after a holder of a private key to authorize withdrawals was cooperating with public security investigators in China. Over at rival exchange Huobi, at least one of its key executives allegedly went missing in China due to an investigation related to the exchange’s over-the-counter (OTC) trading service.

As a result, many Chinese users from OKEx and Huobi, two of the most popular crypto exchanges in China, flocked to Binance, as CoinDesk reported previously.

As sources familiar with the matter told CoinDesk, Binance left China completely when China issued a ban in September 2017 on initial coin offerings (ICOs) and centralized fiat-to-crypto trading. But Huobi and OKEx maintained employees and some operations in China for their significant user bases in the country.

“People mostly care about the safety of their funds,” said Lingxiao Yang, chief operating officer at San Francisco-based crypto hedge fund Trade Terminal. “Most of the staffers of Huobi and OKEx are still in China, especially their executives. Once they are under the control (of the Chinese regulators), there’s no guarantee of the safety of users’ funds.”

Binance’s significance to China

For now, Binance’s clean breakup with China ended up being a smart move, ironically, for its business in China, one of the most active crypto communities and user bases in the world.

Meanwhile, Binance, with its roots in China, provides one of the best and most comfortable user experiences for Chinese traders and investors, whether it is the exchange’s Chinese-language platform or its Chinese customer service, according to industry experts.

“Binance is still the best option for traders” in China, said Rachel Lin, CEO of decentralized derivatives exchange SynFutures. “They are more worried about using Huobi and OKEx.”

Lin added that as the biggest crypto exchange by bitcoin futures open interest, the level of market depth offered by Binance’s USDT-margined futures products is hard to compete with.

A source from a China-based crypto fund, who spoke to CoinDesk on condition of anonymity, said that they will continue to work with Binance because tokens from many projects they’ve invested in are mainly — if not solely — traded on Binance.

Binance has a strong focus on alternative token (altcoin) trading, with more than 1,100 crypto trading pairs available, per data from CoinMarketCap. Outside the exchange, it also runs or supports multiple platforms including an initial exchange offering (IEO) platform called Binance Launchpad, which offers a direct listing and launch campaign for new startup tokens, and Binance Smart Chain (BSC), a public blockchain that powers numerous successful decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols.

“Binance is the king of altcoin liquidity,” Ashwath Balakrishnan, research associate at blockchain research firm Delphi Digital, said. “So [it] would really need sizable outflows [from Binance] to confirm that” altcoin liquidity moves elsewhere.

Many “VIP” users on Binance also value the highly competitive trading fee discounts offered on Binance, a feature that especially benefits those who conduct high-frequency trading strategies, the person from the China-based crypto fund said, whose company is also a Binance VIP client.

China’s importance to Binance

Today, even though Binance has gone much further beyond a local exchange catering to the Chinese market, China remains an essential market for it, just as Binance is also an essential and preferred platform for Chinese crypto traders and investors.

A report by Chainalysis released on August 3 shows that between January 2021 and June 2021, more than $150 million worth of cryptocurrency was sent to addresses estimated to be controlled by users in China, second only to the U.S.

Amid further crackdown by the Chinese government on crypto, both Huobi and OKEx recently were reported to be dissolving their entities in China. It is still too early to tell whether Chinese users would partially rebuild their trust with the two exchanges after their respective actions.

A likely winner from Binance’s regulatory downfall could be FTX, the centralized crypto exchange focusing on derivatives products helmed by Sam Bankman-Fried.

“The market changes fast and it’s a fact that FTX is growing,” Trade Terminal’s Yang said.

Data from Skew shows that FTX has surpassed both OKEx and Huobi and is now the second largest crypto exchange by bitcoin futures open interest.

FTX is “becoming very retail friendly, especially after acquiring Blockfolio,” Delphi Digital’s Balakrishnan said, in explaining FTX’s rapid growth. Blockfolio, a crypto mobile news and portfolio tracking app, mainly focuses on a retail customer base.

Interestingly, Binance, an early investor in FTX, recently exited its position in FTX, as Bankman-Fried said that his company bought out Binance’s shares in FTX. The move appears a bit strange as FTX just announced a $900 million funding round, the largest funding round for a crypto exchange in history.

“I think it just makes sense given the role that our businesses are playing in the space,” Bankman-Fried said in an interview with Decrypt, implying that he didn’t want Binance’s issues with regulators to affect FTX.

At the time of writing, Binance is still the largest bitcoin futures exchange by open interest, contributing $3.17 billion, according to Skew. The number for FTX, the second largest, is about $2.02 billion.

At least for now, Binance’s dominance remains unchallenged.

Crypto Tax Exemptions Floated for $1T US Senate Bill

5 years 2 months ago

Senators Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.) and Pat Toomey (R-Penn.) want to ensure miners, node operators, developers and other non-custodial crypto industry participants are exempt from a crypto tax reporting provision in the U.S.’ infrastructure bill.

The bill, which seeks to fund $1 trillion in infrastructure improvements at least in part through widened tax enforcement on crypto entities, sparked backlash from the crypto community due to the possibility that it might broaden the definition of a broker to include non-custodial entities that don’t have customers nor provide those types of services. Wyden and Lummis’ amendment, proposed Thursday, seeks to limit this definition specifically to trading platforms and similar types of entities.

The amendment said:

Related: Ohio Sen. Rob Portman Defends Crypto Provision in US Infrastructure Bill

“Nothing in this section … shall be construed to create any inference that a person described in [the bill] includes any person solely engaged in the business of (A) validating distributed ledger transactions, (B) selling hardware or software for which the sole function is to permit a person to control private keys … or (C) developing digital assets or their corresponding protocols for use by other persons, such that such other persons are not customers of the person developing such assets or protocols.”

The amendment also includes a provision that the section on crypto brokers will not modify the Securities Act of 1933 or Securities Exchange Act of 1934, two major laws overseeing the federal securities markets.

The Senate is currently debating and voting on a number of possible amendments to the bill, which has bipartisan support in the upper house of the U.S. Congress. Another of these amendments, introduced by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) seeks to “strike” the provision, although the text of that amendment was not immediately available.

In a statement, Lummis said that the amendment is a first step to integrating crypto with the current U.S. economy, though “much more work needs to be done.”

Related: Crypto Tax Proposal in US Has Had Limited Impact on Bitcoin Market

“The digital asset and financial technology space is incredibly complicated, and we have spent long hours working in the Senate, with industry stakeholders, and with the Administration to find a way to effectively integrate digital assets into our tax code without harming the technology or stifling innovation. I look forward to continuing this bipartisan work to bring our financial industry into the 21st Century,” she said.

Wyden said that investors “failing to pay tax” through cryptocurrencies “is a real problem” and that he supports the overall thrust of the provision in requiring third-party reporting.

“Our amendment makes clear that reporting does not apply to individuals developing block chain technology and wallets. This will protect American innovation while at the same time ensuring those who buy and sell cryptocurrency pay the taxes they already owe,” he said in a statement.

Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio), who likely introduced the original provision into the tax bill, defended the phrasing in a Twitter thread late Tuesday.

Meanwhile, in a joint statement, the Blockchain Association, Coinbase, Coin Center, Ribbit Capital and Square expressed support for the amendment, pointing to the original broad definition of “broker.”

“Clarifying the provision to address our concerns would not affect the reporting requirements on crypto exchanges that operate on behalf of customers. We support sensible reporting requirements that are consistent with those that apply to traditional financial services,” the statement said.

Blockchain and cybersecurity

Separately, Lummis filed another amendment with Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) that would task federal regulators with evaluating different tools to track illegal transactions made using cryptocurrencies.

The amendment would apply to a section on cybersecurity within the infrastructure bill.

If the amendment is adopted and the bill is passed, these federal agency heads, which include the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) and FBI, as well as the Secretary of Homeland Security and Attorney General, would have 180 days to develop a joint agreement on what digital asset analytics tools can and can’t do, as well as possible improvements.

The agencies would also have to provide any recommendations on how they can mitigate any illegal activity occurring through the use of cryptocurrencies.

Lummis said cryptocurrencies could be used for both good and bad purposes, just as cash can.

“We need to ensure that agencies of jurisdiction have the strategies and resources to harness that built-in security to combat money laundering and other nefarious activity. This amendment will do just that, and I’m grateful to Senator Blackburn for working with me to make this happen,” she said in a statement.

The amendments still need to be voted on, and the Senate is expected to discuss these issues through the rest of the week. At the end of the amendment period, lawmakers will vote to actually advance the bill.

However, the overall process of passing the infrastructure bill into law is likely to take months. After the Senate completes its work, the bill will go to the House of Representatives, which will also discuss the bill before voting on it.

UPDATE (Aug. 4, 2021, 18:55 UTC): Updated with link to amendment and statements from associated parties.

Blockchain Developer Toolkit Alchemy Adds High-Profile Angels to $80M Series B

5 years 2 months ago

Two DJs, the president of Morgan Stanley, an ecommerce kingpin and a smattering of other high-profile angel investors have joined behind-the-scenes blockchain startup Alchemy Insights’ $80 million Series B.

A source familiar with the matter told CoinDesk that Alchemy had earmarked some of its Series B equity for soon-to-be investors when it unveiled that round in April. The Bay Area company, which builds infrastructure and developer tools for consumer-facing crypto firms, commanded a $505 million valuation at the time.

“My heart bleeds a little bit for developers and I have great sympathy for dev tools that better enable them,” said Chainalysis CEO Michael Gronager, one of the angels.

Alchemy’s new investors include DJs 3LAU and Zedd, Morgan Stanley President and COO Vikram Pandit, Checkout.com CEO Guillaume Pousaz, Neythri Futures Fund, former Disney Chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg and others.

The four-year-old startup has grown tenfold in three months, the source said, as NFT-focused chains such as Dapper Labs’ Flow and other hot protocols like Polygon signed on. Alchemy helps those companies handle their booming transaction volumes more efficiently.

That’s been of special concern for NFT marketplaces servicing the breakout crypto asset subsector of 2021. Activity bellwether OpenSea has processed over $120 million in NFT trading volume so far this month, according to Dune Analytics, an industry tracker. It’s also an Alchemy customer.

“Their platform powers many of the best companies in the space, including all the leading NFT companies,” said 3LAU, a DJ and proponent of all things crypto.

Grayscale Hires David LaValle to Be ETF Head

5 years 2 months ago

Digital asset management firm Grayscale Investments has hired David LaValle, the former CEO of index provider Alerian, to be its ETF chief, according to Grayscale CEO Michael Sonnenshein.

LaValle is Grayscale’s first hire for its ETF business following the posting in the spring of several job listings by Grayscale for ETF specialists. (Grayscale is a subsidiary of Digital Currency Group, CoinDesk’s parent company.)

Before Alerian, LaValle spent time at various stock exchanges, built out ETF listings at Nasdaq and led a segment of State Street’s ETF business as head of the bank’s capital markets team.

Related: Market Wrap: Bitcoin Expected to Pause Before Next Rally

According to LaValle, a bitcoin ETF is part of the natural evolution of ETFs.

“Starting 25-plus years ago, ETFs were focused on U.S. domestic equities then moving into international equities, commodities, fixed income and sub-sectors of fixed income,” LaValle told CoinDesk. “Obviously now we’re moving into the next wave of evolution which I’m extremely excited about.”

Sonnenshein didn’t comment on how many people Grayscale would hire for its ETF business (currently it has 10 other positions open), but noted that Grayscale’s ETF ambitions go beyond just converting GBTC into an ETF.

A bitcoin ETF would be a retail-accessible trading vehicle offering both individuals and institutions exposure to the bitcoin market without having to hold bitcoin itself. The industry has long clamored for an ETF, and several bitcoin ETF applications are under review at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

SEC Needs Clear Authority Over Crypto Platforms, Gensler Says

5 years 2 months ago

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) needs clear authority over platforms that trade or lend crypto, Chair Gary Gensler said.

  • Talking to CNBC’s Squawk Box Wednesday, the SEC chief spoke of the agency’s desire to “stitch together” consumer protection on platforms that offer lending or trading of both tokens sold as securities, and tokens sold as commodities.
  • Gensler said many crypto trading and lending platforms are “standing astride regulation,” given this nuance.
  • “If they’re trading securities, I’m encouraging them to come in and have a frank discussion,” Gensler said, suggesting that many platforms are reticent to do so.
  • Asked about how the desire for robust regulation would naturally clash with bitcoin’s original ethos of outsider money, Gensler praised the “off the grid, libertarian” values of crypto, but stressed the importance of preventing fraud, terrorism and other crime, citing the recent attack on Colonial Pipeline as an example.

Gaming Community Pledges $203M in Ember Sword’s Virtual NFT Land Sale

5 years 2 months ago

Nearly 35,000 members of the gaming community have collectively pledged more than $203 million to purchase virtual plots of land in the online world of Ember Sword, an unreleased play-to-earn massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG).

Bright Star Studios, the game’s Danish developer, will sort through the applications before choosing successful candidates to purchase the 6,000 plots of land available in the Solarwood Nation, one of Ember Sword’s four virtual worlds.

Owning land in Ember Sword gives gamers the opportunity to share in trading fees and earn Ember, the game’s ERC-20 token, from economic activity on and around their virtual plots of land.

Ember Sword, which plans to launch pre-alpha testing for virtual land owners and select community members later this year, is following in the footsteps of other play-to-earn blockchain-based games like Axie Infinity that are revolutionizing online gaming.

“We are working to develop a player-driven economy that allows gamers to earn rewards and make money through in-game activities, including the creation of unique, tradable NFT items,” Ember Sword CEO Mark Laursen said in a statement.

Bright Star founder Loren Roosendaal estimates that 70%-80% of applications for the NFT land sale came from individual gamers, but groups including Twitch streamers, virtual real estate firms, and decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) like Yield Guild Games accounted for the rest.

Ember Sword’s most recent land sale comes after a $1.5 million sale in May, which Roosendaal told CoinDesk struggled with technical challenges after demand exceeded Bright Star’s expectations.

Valkyrie Launches a Dash Trust That Includes Staking

5 years 2 months ago

Valkyrie Digital Assets is offering its third closed-end crypto fund that includes staking on top of exposure to the underlying asset.

The digital asset manager launched a trust denominated in dash, a cryptocurrency that is designed for payments. Earlier this year, it launched Algorand Trust and a Polkadot Trust.

“This was actually supposed to be our second trust that we launched after bitcoin,” said Steven McClurg, Valkyrie’s chief investment officer. “The hardest piece was the staking part. There’s a lot of tax law considerations that we have to go through when we launch any sort of staking within a trust.”

Related: Digital Asset Funds Suffered Outflows as Bitcoin Price Recovered

Valkyrie didn’t reveal the yield on the trust, but added that it would trade on over-the-counter markets where it would be available to retail investors.

“I’m personally very excited to see a product that I can more easily point institutions and individuals [to] looking to hold dash in a retirement account,” said Ryan Taylor, CEO of Dash Core Group, the company that developed the dash coin.

The fund will allow institutions to gain exposure to staking dash without having to run a “master node,” which would require them to hold 1,000 dash. That would cost about $163,000 at current prices, compared with the $25,000 minimum investment for the Valkyrie trust.

Taylor also told CoinDesk that he hopes to one day see a Dash exchange-traded fund (ETF), or for Valkyrie’s trust to be converted into an ETF. McClurg added that Valkyrie would begin looking into ETF conversion for its non-bitcoin trusts after a bitcoin ETF has been approved in the U.S. and the other digital assets have reached a market capitalization that satisfies the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s aim for liquidity for those assets.

No More Lengthy Wallet Addresses – Send USDC to ‘username.coin’

5 years 2 months ago

Users of USDC (USDC) can now send the stablecoin to simple wallet addresses employing an easy username instead of the jumble of alphanumeric characters now associated with blockchain domains.

  • Circle, the principal operator of USDC, worked with blockchain domain name provider Unstoppable Domains to bring this function to its users, with domains starting at $40.
  • The collaboration is designed to bring increased simplicity and accessibility to USDC payments, with users able to exchange usernames followed by the .coin domain.
  • As much as the crypto sector grows, sending and receiving payments using a long sequence of random alphanumeric characters as an address could remain a barrier to some users, with fear of funds going astray.
  • Being able to use a simple username akin to a Twitter or Instagram handle may help ease those concerns and uncertainty, and make sending crypto payments more like sending an email or a text.
  • Users are prevented from co-opting recognized brands such as Apple or Google to ensure only the brand owner can claim that handle, Unstoppable Domains co-founder Brad Kam told CoinDesk.

According to a press release shared with CoinDesk on Wednesday, Kitco Gold (KGLD) will be fully backed by physical gold held in Kitco’s DirectReserve vaults and track the real-time market value of the yellow metal.

The exact date to begin trading KGLD has yet to be set, but will be in the coming weeks, according to a spokesperson.

Hong Kong’s First Digital Trust will provide regulatory compliance, know-your-customer and anti-money laundering procedures, funds processing and final authorization. Stablecoin issuer Stably will provide smart contract technology for minting and burning KGLD on the Ethereum network while Tradewind Markets will assist in settlement.

The ERC-20 stablecoin attempts to combine the safe-haven nature of owning gold with the flexibility and transparency of digital assets, Kitco said.

Kitco is a global retailer and provider of precious metals news and data used by millions to access the market prices of gold, silver and palladium among others. Users will gain access to the digital equivalent of Kitco’s depositories and vaults, audited to industry standards, per the release.

John Dourekas, chief business development officer at Kitco Digital Metals Group, said KGLD represents a digital receipt of physical gold ownership and provides institutional investors with a “robust” asset class.

Senator Rob Portman Defends Crypto Provision in US Infrastructure Bill

5 years 2 months ago

U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-Ohio) has come out to defend a controversial crypto provision he slipped into a $1 trillion infrastructure bill currently being debated in the Senate.

The provision seeks to raise $28 billion from crypto businesses in the form of tax receipts by applying new information reporting requirements to exchanges and potentially other types of businesses.

Portman argues his “common-sense” provision will provide enhanced clarity and legitimacy for the crypto industry by standardizing information reporting by brokers to the Internal Revenue Service.

Related: Crypto Tax Proposal in US Has Had Limited Impact on Bitcoin Market

The controversy centers around the definition of the term “broker” as any person who provides a service “effectuating transfers of digital assets on behalf of another person.” Some argue this has wide-reaching implications and could extend to decentralized exchanges as well as crypto miners.

Decentralized exchanges were explicitly named in an earlier draft of the provision, though it was removed in the final version published late Sunday.

Portman has defended criticism over the legislation saying it does not intend to impose new reporting requirements on software developers, crypto miners, node operators, or other non-brokers.

“It simply says that brokers must comply with standard information reporting obligations. Which many already do,” the senator said.

There is bipartisan opposition to the provision however. Senators Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.) and Pat Toomey (R-Penn.) are working on an amendment to modify the language, though how they intend to do so is not yet known.

The crypto provision was one of a handful of issues that have held up the 2,702-page infrastructure bill, CoinDesk previously reported.

  • Around 11.45 a.m. “some serious hashing power” was unleashed on the network, tweeted Lucas Nuzzi, network data product manager at CoinMetrics.
  • The intelligence firm later corroborated his report, tweeting that its blockchain security monitoring tool FARUM saw a 14-block reorg of the network.
  • CoinMetrics said that the attack had ended but that there was still confusion between mining pools. Pools are mining on “completely different” block heights at the moment, Nuzzi told CoinDesk in a message late on Tuesday.
  • A 51% attack occurs when malicious miners take control of more than 50% of a Proof-of-Work blockchain. The attackers can take advantage of block reorganization, a feature meant to clear up incidences when two miners have mined the same block.
  • Broadly speaking, when two versions of the same blocks are mined, the system defaults to the longest chain. By mining faster than the honest miners during a 51% attack, the assailants can create a longer chain, such that the system will render the honest miners’ blocks invalid.
  • The Bitcoin Association recommended that node operators invalidate the fraudulent chain.
  • Bitcoin SV, which was born through a hard fork of Bitcoin Cash, suffered four attacks in July.
  • There is no “clear indication” of who the attacker was and CoinMetrics is still looking into the attacker’s chain for “traces of double spends targeting exchanges,” Nuzzi said.
  • Major BSV mining pools are still struggling to align on the same blockchain, he said.
  • The BSV hashrate fell by almost 50% from Monday to Tuesday, according to Bitinfocharts. But Nuzzi said that due to the confusion after the reorg, it’s hard to estimate how much the hashrate has dropped.

UPDATE (August 4, 04:00 UTC): Added quote from Lucas Nuzzi and information on hashrate and block reorgs.

CORRECTION (August 4, 4:00 UTC): The block reorg was 14 blocks, according to CoinMetrics.
