Bitcoin Oversold Bounce Fades; Support at $34K-$36K

5 years 2 months ago

Bitcoin (BTC) sellers returned during Asia hours given strong resistance near the $40,000 level. The cryptocurrency was trading around $38,000 at press time and is down 5% over the past week. Initial support is seen around $34,000 and $36,000, which could stabilize the pullback.

  • The relative strength index (RSI) on the four-hour chart made a series of lower highs as upside momentum slowed. Short-term buyers responded to oversold conditions on Wednesday but failed to push past $40,000 resistance.
  • Initial support is seen at $36,000, which is near the 100-period moving average on the four-hour chart. Buyers will likely defend support above $30,000 as bitcoin remains in a consolidation phase.
  • Bitcoin’s intermediate-term downtrend remains in effect despite the near 30% short-squeeze rally over the past two weeks.

Bitcoin Again Falters at $40K as Ether Retreats From Two-Month High

5 years 2 months ago

Bitcoin and ether erased Wednesday’s gains as Ethereum’s highly-anticipated London hard fork, or backward-incompatible upgrade, neared.

Having faced rejection at $40,000 early Thursday, bitcoin, the top cryptocurrency by market value is currently trading near $38,000. The 4% drop has nearly reversed Wednesday’s rally from $37,500.

Ether is also down 4% near $2,600 at press time after having jumped 8% to $2,770 on Wednesday and hitting the highest level since June 7, according to CoinDesk 20 data.

Related: Ether Price Jumps After London Hard Fork Takes Effect

The London hard fork, which includes four Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIP), is scheduled for implementation around 12:30 UTC, according to etherscan.io. One of the proposals, EIP 1559, will introduce a mechanism to burn a portion of fees paid to miners, thereby curbing ether’s supply growth over time and bringing store-of-value appeal to the native token of Ethereum’s blockchain.

Some analysts have cautioned that the upgrade’s positive effect will be seen over time, and there may be little or no immediate price action.

Ether has gained nearly 60% in the two weeks leading up to the upgrade. As such, it looks prone to a “sell-the-fact” trade. “Buy the rumor, sell the fact” refers to a situation where some traders buy an asset in the run-up to a supposedly bullish event and sell after it occurs.

However, technical charts are painting a bullish picture. “A new oversold upturn in the weekly stochastics [indicator] suggests ether can clear a 38.2% Fibonacci resistance level near $2724 for a target of a 61.8% Fibonacci retracement level near $3356,” Katie Stockton, founder and managing partner of Fairlead Strategies, said in the weekly research note published on Monday.

Related: Bitcoin Oversold Bounce Fades; Support at $34K-$36K

As for bitcoin, Stockton expects consolidation for a while longer before extending the recent recovery rally from $30,000. Bitcoin jumped over 12% last week, its best weekly performance in three months. The momentum, however, has faltered this week, with prices falling to $37,500 on Wednesday.

“We expect the pullback to mature in 1-2 weeks near the 50-day MA (~$34,800), after which bitcoin is likely to clear $42,600 for a revised upside target of a secondary Fibonacci retracement level near $51,000,” Stockton noted, referring to the 50-day moving average.

The options market seems to agree with Stockton’s bullish view. While last week’s aggressive call buying has cooled, the demand for puts, or bearish bets, remains low. The put-call open interest ratio continues to slide, hinting at fading fears of a deeper price drop, as Delphi Digital noted in its daily analysis.

Newsflow continues to be positive, highlighting traditional investors’ growing appetite for cryptocurrency. JPMorgan has started pitching a passive bitcoin fund to private clients, CoinDesk reported early today.

Bitcoin’s immediate prospects will turn bleak if the 50-day moving average support at $34,800 is breached.

French Asset Manager Wins Approval to Launch Bitcoin ETF in EU

5 years 2 months ago

French asset manager Melanion Capital won regulatory approval to launch an exchange-traded fund (ETF) tracking the price of bitcoin for investors across the European Union (EU).

  • The Paris-based firm received approval from the French regulators to launch a fund that will track a basket of up to 30 stocks with a 90% correlation to bitcoin’s price, according to an emailed statement Wednesday.
  • The Melanion BTC Equities Universe Ucits ETF has been determined by regulators to meet EU standards, known as “undertakings for the collective investment in transferable securities” (UCITS), meaning it will be available to investors across the bloc, an EU first for a bitcoin-correlated fund.
  • “While there have been many bitcoin-backed exchange-traded products listed in Europe, most European regulators apply a look-through approach, rendering them ineligible for most institutional investors due to their investment restrictions,” Melanion said.
  • The fund will track stocks such as mining firms Argo Blockchain, Riot Blockchain and Hive Blockchain as well as crypto investment firm Arcane Crypto.
  • The weighting of the fund will be determined by German fintech Bita, which provides software for the calculation of financial indexes and quantitative investment strategies.
  • The fund will be listed on Euronext in Paris charging a fee of 0.75%.

CoinShares Earnings Surge in First Half

5 years 2 months ago

CoinShares, Europe’s largest digital asset investment firm, said its adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (Ebitda) climbed more than sevenfold in the first half of the year.

  • Comprehensive income, a profit measure that includes the change in the value of its digital assets, climbed more than fivefold to £58.7 million ($82 million), the Jersey-based company said in a statement.
  • “This performance has been primarily driven by bitcoin and ethereum prices reaching all-time highs in April and May 2021, respectively,” the company said. “This has resulted in increased management fees across the Group’s Asset Management Platform.”
  • The volatility that subsequently brought about dramatic declines in BTC and ETH prices, however, seems to have taken its toll on CoinShares’ assets under management (AUM).
  • The firm’s AUM at the end of June stood at £2.2 billion ($3 billion), a 33% decline from $4.5 billion at the end of last year.
  • CoinShares began trading on the Nasdaq First North Growth Market in March following a public offering that raised $17.8 million.

JPMorgan Launches In-House Bitcoin Fund for Private Bank Clients

5 years 2 months ago

JPMorgan Chase began pitching an in-house bitcoin fund to its Private Bank clients for the first time this week, completing its transformation from the “never-bitcoin” mega-bank to a participant in the digital assets market.

The passively managed fund doesn’t have any investments from clients yet, according to two people familiar with the matter. That could soon change because advisers were primed about the fund only yesterday in a call with the bank. JPMorgan declined to comment. The fund is being offered in partnership with NYDIG, which is the bitcoin arm of asset-management firm Stone Ridge.

The fund, which CoinDesk revealed in late April, will be presented to clients as the safest and cheapest bitcoin investment vehicle available on private markets, the sources said.

JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon, a bitcoin skeptic, once said he would fire any JPMorgan employee who traded bitcoin, according to the Australian Financial Review. But more recently he has said that clients want to invest in them and therefore JPMorgan has a responsibility to deliver crypto investments safely.

“I am not a bitcoin supporter, I don’t really care about bitcoin,” Dimon told the Wall Street Journal in May. “On the other hand, clients are interested and I don’t tell clients what to do.”

The private fund would also act as a port to a bitcoin exchange-traded fund if the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission ever approves a crypto ETF, a source said.

JPMorgan doesn’t have a bitcoin ETF bid before the SEC, but almost a dozen other firms do, including Grayscale, which is widely expected to eventually convert its high-fee Grayscale Bitcoin Trust product to an ETF. Grayscale is owned by the Digital Currency Group, the parent company of CoinDesk.

NYDIG has also filed for a bitcoin ETF application, which the SEC is reviewing.

All of JPMorgan’s wealth management clients recently gained the ability to access bitcoin funds such as GBTC through JPMorgan brokerage account, according to Business Insider. The new bitcoin fund, however, is limited to JPMorgan Private Bank customers.

JPMorgan Launches In-House Bitcoin Fund for Wealthy Clients

5 years 2 months ago

JPMorgan Chase began pitching its Private Bank clients on an in-house bitcoin fund for the first time this week, completing its transformation from the never-bitcoin mega-bank to a genuine player in the digital assets space.

According to two sources familiar with the matter, the passively managed fund, offered in partnership with bitcoin powerhouse NYDIG, doesn’t yet have any investments from clients. That could soon change; advisers were primed only yesterday in a launch call with the bank. JPMorgan declined to comment.

The fund, which CoinDesk revealed in late April, will be presented to clients as the safest and cheapest bitcoin investment vehicle available on the private markets, the sources said.

That’s keeping with the party line from the bank’s bitcoin skeptic CEO, Jamie Dimon. Despite his historically vehement disdain for spooky internet money, Dimon has repeatedly said that clients want the stuff, and therefore JPMorgan has a responsibility to deliver it safely.

“I am not a Bitcoin supporter, I don’t really care about Bitcoin,” Dimon told the Wall Street Journal in May. “On the other hand, clients are interested and I don’t tell clients what to do.”

The private fund would also act as an easy port over to a bitcoin exchange-traded fund once that long-sought product clears the high bar of the Securities and Exchange Commission, a source said.

JPMorgan does not currently have a bitcoin ETF bid before the SEC, but nearly a dozen other firms do. Others are waiting with eagerness; Grayscale (a sister company to CoinDesk) is widely expected to convert its high-fee Grayscale Bitcoin Trust product to an ETF once the time is right.

Coinbase Agrees to Buy Zabo, the ‘Plaid of Crypto,’ for Undisclosed Sum

5 years 2 months ago

Coinbase, the cryptocurrency exchange listed on the Nasdaq, has agreed to acquire Zabo, a startup that lets financial companies give their customers a bird’s-eye view of their crypto investments.

Zabo, whose co-founders work out of the Dallas-Ft. Worth area, announced the deal in a blog post Wednesday. It did not disclose the terms of the deal, except to emphasize that it was a proper acquisition, not an “acqui-hire,” meaning Coinbase is buying Zabo for its offerings, not just the people. The transaction should close in the coming weeks, said Alex Treece, one of the co-founders.

“We’ve been lucky to know multiple folks on the Coinbase team for years,” said Christopher Brown, the other co-founder. “We saw that there were amazing opportunities to work together, which led to us officially joining forces.” He would not elaborate on the companies’ future plans.

Zabo’s service is similar to those offered in the traditional financial services industry by vendors like Plaid and Yodlee, except instead of bank or brokerage accounts it connects crypto wallets.

Coinbase has acquired, agreed to acquire or entered talks with a number of companies in the crypto space before and after going public in April, including trade execution startup Routefire, asset manager Osprey Funds, prime brokerage Tagomi and data provider Skew.

Digital Currency Group, the parent company of CoinDesk, is an investor in Zabo and Coinbase.

Oscar Mayer Auctions Off Single Pack of ‘Hot Doge Wieners’ Worth 10,000 Dogecoins

5 years 2 months ago

Oscar Mayer, a unit of food giant Kraft Heinz, finally got around to issuing a product that takes advantage of this year’s massive dogecoin hype.

  • The longtime hot dog maker has put a limited-edition pack of “Hot Doge Wieners” that “comes with the cash value of…10,000 Dogecoins” for sale on eBay.
  • The company said in a tweet Wednesday that it was only making one pack of the special wieners.
  • Bidding had reached $3,450 by late Wednesday but ended abruptly before publication. The auction was set to end on Aug. 7 at 7 p.m. UTC.
  • At current prices, 10,000 dogecoins would be worth about $2,000.
  • It was unclear how the dogecoins would be transferred to the winning bidder.
  • Earlier this year, smoked meat vendor Slim Jim, a unit of Conagra Brands, saw significant increases in customer interactions after embarking on a dogecoin-focused marketing strategy that also helped boost the price of the cryptocurrency.

Why Web 3.0 Tokens Might Be the Next Hot Trade in Cryptocurrencies

5 years 2 months ago

With bitcoin prices stuck in a months-long holding pattern, some cryptocurrency traders are speculating on what might be the next hot market bet: digital assets associated with visions of a decentralized Internet, referred to colloquially as Web 3.0 tokens.

Data tracked by Messari and published by Arca Chief Investment Officer Jeff Dorman shows the cryptocurrency sub-sector of “Web 3.0 tokens” gained 22% in the week ended Aug. 1, outshining bitcoin and every other sub-sector, including non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Bitcoin, the largest cryptocurrency by market value, rallied 10%.

On a year-to-date basis, tokens associated with decentralized Internet applications have seen an average 244% rise, trailing the NFT sub-sector’s 2,726% gain but beating bitcoin’s 37% appreciation.

Related: Market Wrap: Bitcoin and Ether Rise on Bullish Sentiment

Some of the most prominent Web 3.0 coins, such as livepeer (LPT), helium (HNT), and bittorrent (BTT), are up at least 800% this year, despite a slump in cryptocurrency markets since April, according to Messari.

“Seeing the Web 3.0 ecosystem grow exponentially since the beginning of the year and keep the majority of their gains after the capitulation even in May is very positive for the crypto market,” Nick Mancini, a research analyst for Trade The Chain, told CoinDesk. “Higher prices are directly linked to increased demand and expansion of services in each layer, and because of this, the ecosystem is able to continue its growth.”

Web 3.0 refers to a paradigm shift for the Internet run by network participants worldwide and defined by a set of open, trust-minimized and decentralized networks and protocols offering services such as computing, storage, bandwidth, finance and identity.

For instance, the Ethereum-based Livepeer protocol offers a marketplace for video infrastructure providers and streaming applications, while Filecoin and The Graph provide decentralized file storage and data management networks. Helium uses blockchains and tokens to incentivize consumers and small businesses to provide and validate wireless coverage and transfer device data over the network.

Related: Bitcoin News Update for August 4, 2021

Messari’s tracker shows the Web 3.0 tokens sub-sector, which includes over 40 coins, has a total market valuation of $25 billion, excluding oracle provider Chainlink. (The oracle provider is widely associated with decentralized finance and has a market cap of $10 billion).

However, just considering prominent projects like The Graph, Filecoin, Helium and Livepeer, the market capitalization of Web 3.0 tokens tallies less than $15 billion. That’s just 2% of bitcoin’s total market capitalization of $735 billion. But it’s similar to the size of the decentralized finance (DeFi) space a year ago. Messari data shows the DeFi subsector now includes 137 assets and is worth over $50 billion.

Awaiting Mainstream Attention

While the Web 3.0 tokens have outperformed bitcoin and other major coins by a big margin this year, the sector is yet to witness the euphoria or mainstream attention that Bitcoin, Ethereum, DeFi, NFT, and even Ethereum layer 2 projects have received since October 2020.

That’s probably because the underlying technology is relatively complex.

“Web 3 is not quite as easy as DeFi is to understand, and it’s probably 12 months behind DeFi in terms of mainstream awareness,” Kyle Samani, co-founder and managing partner at Multicoin Capital, said. “We expect this to change as consumer-facing applications based on NFTs, social tokens and creator monetization grow over the next 12 months such as Audius, Mirror, and many others.”

The DeFi boom began a year ago and has remained intact to date. That sector’s market cap has grown from roughly $5 billion in early 2020 to over $50 billion at press time.

Samani is confident that Web 3.0 tokens will play catch up as DeFi sometimes gets a bad rep; however, there is no negativity associated yet with the idea of a decentralized internet. Recently, Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) Commissioner Dan Berkovitz said that DeFi derivatives might be illegal in the U.S.

“No one really says that The Graph, an indexing protocol for querying networks like Ethereum and Solana and IPFS, is bad, whereas a lot of people in the existing financial system say that DeFi is bad,” Samani said. “So as the awareness of Web 3 grows, it’s hard to see anything but general support and enthusiasm.”

Institutions Chip In

While mainstream adoption is still at least a year away, deep-pocketed investors are pouring money into Web 3.0 tokens. Multicoin Capital is invested in The Graph, Helium, and Livepeer, according to the official website.

Grayscale, the world’s largest digital assets manager and preferred venue for institutional investors to gain exposure to digital assets, launched a livepeer trust in March. Rayhaneh Sharif-Askary, director of investor relations at Grayscale Investments, told CoinDesk last month that investors are diversifying into Web 3.0 tokens.

“It’s diversification within the asset class, whether investors want exposure to bitcoin as a store of value, Ethereum for smart contracts,” Sharif-Askary said.

“And then the other applications beyond that are building upon those networks, and solving other real-world problems,” she said, adding that Grayscale’s Livepeer trust is structurally identical to the landmark Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) (Grayscale is a unit of Digital Currency Group, an investment holding company that is also the parent of CoinDesk.)

Livepeer’s LPT token is up 1,050% this year. The protocol’s weekly revenue surged 10-fold to over $10,000 in the February-to-June period, according to data provided by Web3Index.

Doug Petkanics, CEO and co-founder at Livepeer, told CoinDesk that online streaming is a $70 billion market and accounts for 80% of the Internet traffic today. Further, the market is set to grow from $70 billion to $250 billion in the next five years, according to analysts’ projections, Petkanics said. The prospects for The Graph, and Ocean Protocol are also looking bright, as Messari’s second quarter review said.

Aside from the strong use case, many of these Web 3.0 tokens offer attractive yields via Staked, a platform that allows investors to earn yield from staking and DeFi without taking custody of their crypto assets.

For instance, Helium’s HNT token currently offers an annualized 8.7% nominal yield, while The Graph’s GRT offers a 15% yield and LPT offers 30% returns. The high returns led to positive sentiment for these tokens, as reflected in the below sentiment chart.

“Traders have been feeling bullish in regard to them, which fuels a network effect,” Mancini said. “Traders profit and stake, and, in turn, tell others about the outsized opportunity.”

Crypto Market Is Much More Than Bitcoin

The days of investors considering crypto markets synonymous with bitcoin are passé. While bitcoin remains the top cryptocurrency by market value, the recent underperformance relative to other coins suggests investors are diving deeper into digital-asset markets to find investments with faster growth potential.

“One-week data may not mean much, but if we look over three months, six months, and 12 months, there’s a clear shift away from bitcoin into other sub-sectors, Web 3.0 being one of them,” Arca’s Jeff Dorman said in a Telegram call.

Per Arca’s research note published earlier this week, bitcoin has had “both poor up-capture and poor down-capture” this year. In plain English, bitcoin struggled to outperform other major coins during the market-wide downturn observed after mid-April but also underwhelmed as the market recovered in the past couple of weeks.

According to Dorman, the data shows that some new investors are bypassing bitcoin and ether and going directly into other industry sub-sectors. Historically, investors have used the top two coins as gateways.

A16z, BlockTower, Alameda Back $12.5M Round for TrustToken

5 years 2 months ago

TrustToken, operator of decentralized finance (DeFi) lending protocol TrueFi and stablecoin TUSD, has raised $12.5 million in a new funding round.

Blocktower Capital, Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) and Alameda Research led the round by purchasing TRU, TrueFi’s native token, according to a company statement. TrustToken said it would use the proceeds to expand its team and TrueFi’s operations

“We’re looking to use this funding both to help us scale the protocol, size of that existing market, but also help us to branch into new markets,” TrustToken’s co-founder and CEO, Rafael Cosman, told CoinDesk.

Related: Titan Raises $58M in Series B Round Led by A16z

The round shows investors’ growing interest in DeFi, but while most of the loans in this market are secured with cryptocurrency pledged by borrowers, TrueFi lending does not require collateral.

In lieu of pledged assets, TrueFi bases lending decisions on credit scores derived from on-chain and off-chain data. Since November 2020, the protocol has originated over $200 million in loans and paid out $1.7 million to lenders, without any defaults, according to the company.

With most DeFi protocols focusing on overcollateralized lending, “it’s never going to be able to grow to the scale where it can actually take a significant bite out of traditional financing. So a key part of this is actually being able to bring more off-chain data on-chain,” Cosman said.

The round also comes as crypto lending, decentralized and otherwise, is very much on regulators’ radar. In recent weeks, centralized platform BlockFi, which offers interest-bearing accounts collateralized by cryptocurrencies, has drawn the ire of five state regulators.

Celsius, which raised about $20 million last year, has long claimed to demand collateral, though it may quietly have made a few uncollateralized loans.

TrueFi’s on-chain credit scores will be beneficial “for lenders to assess where they want to put their capital,” said Blake Richardson, an investor at BlockTower.

Market Wrap: Bitcoin and Ether Rise on Bullish Sentiment

5 years 2 months ago

Bitcoin bounced back toward $39,000 on Wednesday as buyers responded to short-term oversold conditions. The cryptocurrency is up about 4% over the past 24 hours, compared with a 9% rise in ether during the same period.

“If BTC holds above $40K for a week, the probability of a breakout would increase,” Pankaj Balani, CEO of Delta Exchange, wrote in an email to CoinDesk. “We believe, on a conclusive breakout of $40K level, BTC could challenge the $48K level. On the downside, traders will keenly monitor the $36K level.”

A bitcoin breakout could encourage ether buying, as well. If support holds, ether could rally further and test the $3,000 mark, according to Balani.

“ETH can outperform BTC in the medium- to long-term, but for the next few quarters, ETH should continue to exhibit strong correlation with BTC,” Balani wrote.

Some analysts, however, expect the recent bitcoin bounce to fade.

“Today’s near-term recovery snapping a four-day losing streak can be interpreted as just a rebound with resistance around $42K to $45K,” DailyFX analyst Michael Boutros wrote.

Additionally, a rebound in the U.S. dollar could limit bitcoin’s advance in the near-term, according to Boutros.

Bitcoin active supply

Roughly 33% of the total bitcoin supply was moved on the blockchain over the past six months, according to data from Glassnode. The chart below shows the percent of active bitcoin supply, which could be a potential indicator of holders’ mentality.

Bitcoin active supply is the number of coins transacted at least once over a given period of time. The supply metric declined from a recent peak in April, which coincided with a top in bitcoin’s price of around $63,000. Lower active supply suggests investors are holding their coins, which further reduces the total supply available to be sold.

Declining correlations

Bitcoin’s 90-day correlation with gold turned negative for the first time since November 2017. The cryptocurrency is up about 34% year to date, compared with a 4% loss in gold during the same period. The negative correlation underscores the potential diversification benefits of holding bitcoin in a multi-asset portfolio, albeit with greater volatility.

Stocks have also decoupled from bitcoin over the past year. The S&P 500 is less correlated with bitcoin since the March 2020 pandemic shock caused a sell-off across “risk” assets, including cryptocurrencies.

AAVE and UNI’s decline in exchange reserves

The exchange reserves of many altcoins such as COMP, UMA, SNX and MKR have been increasing since June, noted @kryptonitetrading on CryptoQuant. However, the exchange reserves of AAVE and UNI have been declining, which may indicate that “healthy accumulation has been occurring during this bearish phase in the market,” according to @kryptonitetrading. As the tokens move off exchanges into wallets, it shows investor preference to hold rather than sell.

Altcoin roundup
  • Ether’s London Hard Fork: As the crypto community awaits the supposedly bullish London hard fork on the Ethereum blockchain, some analysts are taking a cautious stance on ether and foresee little price reaction after the upgrade. “I don’t expect much action in any direction,” trader and analyst Alex Kruger told CoinDesk’s Omkar Godbole. “The upgrade itself is overrated, and what matters is what happens after.” Ether is the native token of Ethereum’s blockchain, which is scheduled to undergo a hard fork, or backward-incompatible upgrade, called “London,” on Thursday. Once the upgrade takes effect, it is expected to bring a deflationary asset appeal to ether, possibly drawing more investment demand for the cryptocurrency.

Uruguayan Lawmaker Proposes Bill to Allow Crypto to be Used for Payments

5 years 2 months ago

CORRECTION (Aug. 4, 2021, 21:45 UTC): An earlier version of this article said Sartori’s bill would treat crypto as legal tender. The lawmaker later said it would only allow businesses to accept crypto as payments.

A senator from Uruguay has introduced a bill to allow businesses to accept cryptocurrencies as payments and regulate their use within the South American country.

The bill, which was presented on Tuesday by Sen. Juan Sartori, seeks to provide “legal, financial and fiscal security in the business derived from the production and commercialization” of cryptocurrencies.

Related: Market Wrap: Bitcoin and Ether Rise on Bullish Sentiment

“Crypto assets will be recognized and accepted by law and applicable in any legal business. They will be considered a valid means of payment, in addition to those included in the financial inclusion law, as long as they comply with the rules set forth in the law and the regulations,” the bill said.

Sartori’s bill would establish that cryptocurrencies “are products of free sale by those entities and individuals who wish to commercialize them,” and states that any natural or legal person “may receive and/or send funds in legal tender from and to their own bank accounts or those of licensed companies.”

However, the bill stops short of actually treating cryptocurrencies as legal tender, he told CoinDesk.

If the bill becomes law, the government would issue a “first license” that would enable companies to trade crypto assets on exchanges. A second license would allow “storing, holding or safekeeping crypto assets,” while a third would be used to issue crypto assets or utility tokens with “financial characteristics.”

According to the bill, Uruguay’s executive branch would grant the licenses to entities that are in compliance with anti-money laundering secretariat (Senaclaft) and the Central Bank of Uruguay. For other transactions, the “use of all these instruments will be free and will not require prior consent, permits or licenses.”

Sartori’s bill also stipulates the regulation of crypto mining. Miners wouldn’t need a special license like a doctor, but would need permits from Uruguay’s Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mining in order to operate.

The measure also includes the “promotion of technical training for electrical, civil and computer engineers in the generation of virtual assets.”

According to the bill, Senaclaft “will keep a registry of virtual asset service providers” and of those individuals or legal entities that wish to carry out activities of generation and commercialization of virtual assets.

Sartori belongs to the ruling National Party. He ran for the National Party’s nomination for president in 2019.

In the Senate, the National Party and its allies, which form a coalition named Coalición Multicolor, hold the majority, with 17 of the 30 seats.

To date only one country has adopted bitcoin as legal tender: El Salvador, which approved a bill earlier this year.

Chinese Crypto Traders Remain Confident in Binance Despite Regulatory Woes

5 years 2 months ago

Perhaps reflecting how Binance’s Chinese name “币安” means “safe coins,” many Binance users in China said they aren’t too worried about their funds amid the worsening global crackdown on the world’s biggest crypto exchange by volume.

On the surface, this may seem counter-intuitive. Binance is clearly in the crosshairs of regulators from around the world, having been banned in several countries and facing criminal charges in another. Meanwhile, a recent series of regulatory actions by China against crypto activity has rocked the industry overall and contributed to a plunge in crypto prices.

For Chinese traders, though, Binance is largely viewed as immune to China’s actions, which they see as the biggest threat to exchanges with operations in the country. That’s particularly true given how the nation’s regulators recently brought a company as powerful as Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba to its knees so quickly and harshly.

Binance is considered as relatively safe from this type of action due to the company’s decision to move its operations — and the funds it holds — out of the country back in 2017. This distance from Chinese regulators, combined with trading products available only on Binance, is causing traders to look past the exchange’s issues in other regions and prefer it to rivals with operations or executives still in China.

“People are scared of the relentlessness [of the Chinese regulators],” Alex Zuo, vice president of Singapore-based crypto wallet service Cobo, said, referring to an incident involving crypto exchange OKEx last year when it abruptly suspended all account withdrawals for five weeks. “At least Binance’s platform itself has few safety risks.”

OKEx, with deep ties in China, suspended all withdrawal services after a holder of a private key to authorize withdrawals was cooperating with public security investigators in China. Over at rival exchange Huobi, at least one of its key executives allegedly went missing in China due to an investigation related to the exchange’s over-the-counter (OTC) trading service.

As a result, many Chinese users from OKEx and Huobi, two of the most popular crypto exchanges in China, flocked to Binance, as CoinDesk reported previously.

As sources familiar with the matter told CoinDesk, Binance left China completely when China issued a ban in September 2017 on initial coin offerings (ICOs) and centralized fiat-to-crypto trading. But Huobi and OKEx maintained employees and some operations in China for their significant user bases in the country.

“People mostly care about the safety of their funds,” said Lingxiao Yang, chief operating officer at San Francisco-based crypto hedge fund Trade Terminal. “Most of the staffers of Huobi and OKEx are still in China, especially their executives. Once they are under the control (of the Chinese regulators), there’s no guarantee of the safety of users’ funds.”

Binance’s significance to China

For now, Binance’s clean breakup with China ended up being a smart move, ironically, for its business in China, one of the most active crypto communities and user bases in the world.

Meanwhile, Binance, with its roots in China, provides one of the best and most comfortable user experiences for Chinese traders and investors, whether it is the exchange’s Chinese-language platform or its Chinese customer service, according to industry experts.

“Binance is still the best option for traders” in China, said Rachel Lin, CEO of decentralized derivatives exchange SynFutures. “They are more worried about using Huobi and OKEx.”

Lin added that as the biggest crypto exchange by bitcoin futures open interest, the level of market depth offered by Binance’s USDT-margined futures products is hard to compete with.

A source from a China-based crypto fund, who spoke to CoinDesk on condition of anonymity, said that they will continue to work with Binance because tokens from many projects they’ve invested in are mainly — if not solely — traded on Binance.

Binance has a strong focus on alternative token (altcoin) trading, with more than 1,100 crypto trading pairs available, per data from CoinMarketCap. Outside the exchange, it also runs or supports multiple platforms including an initial exchange offering (IEO) platform called Binance Launchpad, which offers a direct listing and launch campaign for new startup tokens, and Binance Smart Chain (BSC), a public blockchain that powers numerous successful decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols.

“Binance is the king of altcoin liquidity,” Ashwath Balakrishnan, research associate at blockchain research firm Delphi Digital, said. “So [it] would really need sizable outflows [from Binance] to confirm that” altcoin liquidity moves elsewhere.

Many “VIP” users on Binance also value the highly competitive trading fee discounts offered on Binance, a feature that especially benefits those who conduct high-frequency trading strategies, the person from the China-based crypto fund said, whose company is also a Binance VIP client.

China’s importance to Binance

Today, even though Binance has gone much further beyond a local exchange catering to the Chinese market, China remains an essential market for it, just as Binance is also an essential and preferred platform for Chinese crypto traders and investors.

A report by Chainalysis released on August 3 shows that between January 2021 and June 2021, more than $150 million worth of cryptocurrency was sent to addresses estimated to be controlled by users in China, second only to the U.S.

Amid further crackdown by the Chinese government on crypto, both Huobi and OKEx recently were reported to be dissolving their entities in China. It is still too early to tell whether Chinese users would partially rebuild their trust with the two exchanges after their respective actions.

A likely winner from Binance’s regulatory downfall could be FTX, the centralized crypto exchange focusing on derivatives products helmed by Sam Bankman-Fried.

“The market changes fast and it’s a fact that FTX is growing,” Trade Terminal’s Yang said.

Data from Skew shows that FTX has surpassed both OKEx and Huobi and is now the second largest crypto exchange by bitcoin futures open interest.

FTX is “becoming very retail friendly, especially after acquiring Blockfolio,” Delphi Digital’s Balakrishnan said, in explaining FTX’s rapid growth. Blockfolio, a crypto mobile news and portfolio tracking app, mainly focuses on a retail customer base.

Interestingly, Binance, an early investor in FTX, recently exited its position in FTX, as Bankman-Fried said that his company bought out Binance’s shares in FTX. The move appears a bit strange as FTX just announced a $900 million funding round, the largest funding round for a crypto exchange in history.

“I think it just makes sense given the role that our businesses are playing in the space,” Bankman-Fried said in an interview with Decrypt, implying that he didn’t want Binance’s issues with regulators to affect FTX.

At the time of writing, Binance is still the largest bitcoin futures exchange by open interest, contributing $3.17 billion, according to Skew. The number for FTX, the second largest, is about $2.02 billion.

At least for now, Binance’s dominance remains unchallenged.

Crypto Tax Exemptions Floated for $1T US Senate Bill

5 years 2 months ago

Senators Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.) and Pat Toomey (R-Penn.) want to ensure miners, node operators, developers and other non-custodial crypto industry participants are exempt from a crypto tax reporting provision in the U.S.’ infrastructure bill.

The bill, which seeks to fund $1 trillion in infrastructure improvements at least in part through widened tax enforcement on crypto entities, sparked backlash from the crypto community due to the possibility that it might broaden the definition of a broker to include non-custodial entities that don’t have customers nor provide those types of services. Wyden and Lummis’ amendment, proposed Thursday, seeks to limit this definition specifically to trading platforms and similar types of entities.

The amendment said:

“Nothing in this section … shall be construed to create any inference that a person described in [the bill] includes any person solely engaged in the business of (A) validating distributed ledger transactions, (B) selling hardware or software for which the sole function is to permit a person to control private keys … or (C) developing digital assets or their corresponding protocols for use by other persons, such that such other persons are not customers of the person developing such assets or protocols.”

The amendment also includes a provision that the section on crypto brokers will not modify the Securities Act of 1933 or Securities Exchange Act of 1934, two major laws overseeing the federal securities markets.

The Senate is currently debating and voting on a number of possible amendments to the bill, which has bipartisan support in the upper house of the U.S. Congress. Another of these amendments, introduced by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) seeks to “strike” the provision, although the text of that amendment was not immediately available.

In a statement, Lummis said that the amendment is a first step to integrating crypto with the current U.S. economy, though “much more work needs to be done.”

“The digital asset and financial technology space is incredibly complicated, and we have spent long hours working in the Senate, with industry stakeholders, and with the Administration to find a way to effectively integrate digital assets into our tax code without harming the technology or stifling innovation. I look forward to continuing this bipartisan work to bring our financial industry into the 21st Century,” she said.

Wyden said that investors “failing to pay tax” through cryptocurrencies “is a real problem” and that he supports the overall thrust of the provision in requiring third-party reporting.

“Our amendment makes clear that reporting does not apply to individuals developing block chain technology and wallets. This will protect American innovation while at the same time ensuring those who buy and sell cryptocurrency pay the taxes they already owe,” he said in a statement.

Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio), who likely introduced the original provision into the tax bill, defended the phrasing in a Twitter thread late Tuesday.

Meanwhile, in a joint statement, the Blockchain Association, Coinbase, Coin Center, Ribbit Capital and Square expressed support for the amendment, pointing to the original broad definition of “broker.”

“Clarifying the provision to address our concerns would not affect the reporting requirements on crypto exchanges that operate on behalf of customers. We support sensible reporting requirements that are consistent with those that apply to traditional financial services,” the statement said.

Blockchain and cybersecurity

Separately, Lummis filed another amendment with Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) that would task federal regulators with evaluating different tools to track illegal transactions made using cryptocurrencies.

The amendment would apply to a section on cybersecurity within the infrastructure bill.

If the amendment is adopted and the bill is passed, these federal agency heads, which include the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) and FBI, as well as the Secretary of Homeland Security and Attorney General, would have 180 days to develop a joint agreement on what digital asset analytics tools can and can’t do, as well as possible improvements.

The agencies would also have to provide any recommendations on how they can mitigate any illegal activity occurring through the use of cryptocurrencies.

Lummis said cryptocurrencies could be used for both good and bad purposes, just as cash can.

“We need to ensure that agencies of jurisdiction have the strategies and resources to harness that built-in security to combat money laundering and other nefarious activity. This amendment will do just that, and I’m grateful to Senator Blackburn for working with me to make this happen,” she said in a statement.

The amendments still need to be voted on, and the Senate is expected to discuss these issues through the rest of the week. At the end of the amendment period, lawmakers will vote to actually advance the bill.

However, the overall process of passing the infrastructure bill into law is likely to take months. After the Senate completes its work, the bill will go to the House of Representatives, which will also discuss the bill before voting on it.

UPDATE (Aug. 4, 2021, 18:55 UTC): Updated with link to amendment and statements from associated parties.
