The CDC has released a new diagnostic test for COVID-19 and rolled out guidelines for how state and local health labs can correct previously faulty test kits sent out by the agency.
"I hope it's not that bad, but we should assume it will be until we know otherwise," Gates wrote in an article published Friday in The New England Journal of Medicine.
"We need to keep this virus slowed down, because health systems around the world, and I mean North and South, are just not ready," a top WHO official said.

Stocks in Asia declined in Friday afternoon trade after the major indexes on Wall Street tumbled into correction territory overnight as fears over the spread of the coronavirus globally drove investors to safety.
"Our previous assumption that the virus will be contained in China proved optimistic," said Moody's Analytics, which previously predicted a 20% chance of a pandemic.
The cancellations come as South Korea reports rapidly rising cases of the virus, which is believed to have originated in China before spreading globally.
The CDC confirmed late Wednesday the first possible community transmission of the coronavirus in the U.S., a troubling sign that the virus could be spreading undetected.
