US tech stocks also fell sharply on Friday.“In my view, a sustained return to positive ETF inflows would be a stronger bullish signal than a temporary price rebound, as it could indicate genuine improvement in investor confidence and willingness to take on risk,” Simon-Peter Massabni, head of business development at XS.com, said in commentary sent to INN, adding that the Federal Reserve’s late-October decision is the next big test. Under the updated methodology, MSCI excludes non-operating businesses from its Global Investable Market Indexes by applying a multi-step screening framework. Companies must first fail an evaluation of their operating assets before triggering exclusion through four out of five financial ratio tests. For existing constituents, removal requires failing this screening across two consecutive annual filing periods. An earlier August consultation using May 2026 data flagged Strategy, Japan-based Metaplanet, and UK uranium investor Yellow Cake as potential deletions, while SharpLink made a watchlist. Strategy strongly disputed MSCI's approach, calling the proposal "misguided" and asserting that its Bitcoin operations qualify as an operating segment under US accounting standards. Despite its objections, Strategy noted that index-tracking funds held 13 million of its shares, or 3.1 percent of its basic outstanding equity, and claimed exclusion "would not meaningfully affect Strategy." The decision also ends temporary restrictions introduced in October 2025 for firms holding 50 percent or more of their total assets in digital assets. MSCI will publish its final list of affected companies on November 11 ahead of the late-November implementation.Russia sets hard deadline to outlaw P2P crypto tradesThe Bank of Russia confirmed a hard deadline of July 1, 2027, to permanently outlaw direct peer-to-peer cryptocurrency trading between individual citizens. Updated guidance published on Monday (October 12) clarifies that Federal Law No. 282-FZ officially removes person-to-person deals from the list of permitted digital asset operations. After the July cutoff, Russian residents must execute all crypto trades through state-licensed brokers or officially registered digital exchange organizations. Regulators explicitly banned individuals from moving digital assets from regulated accounts into self-custodial wallets where they personally control the private keys. The new laws completely dismantle the popular peer-to-peer loophole Russians currently use to swap rubles via bank transfers for dollar-pegged stablecoins like USDT. Domestic banks must automatically reject any client attempting to fund foreign crypto platforms and block incoming ruble transfers originating from those offshore exchanges. Major state-backed institutions are already moving to dominate this newly restricted market, with Russia's largest lender Sberbank officially joining the central bank's crypto registry to launch compliant trading products by December.Circle pushes USDC into 40 emerging markets Circle Internet Group (NYSE:CRCL) is aggressively pushing its USDC stablecoin into 40 new emerging markets across Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East to capture surging global demand. CEO Jeremy Allaire confirmed the expansion strategy during a recent media interview, declaring that blockchain technology has officially crossed from early adoption into mainstream commercial scaling. International businesses and retail users are rapidly adopting dollar-pegged stablecoins for everyday commercial payments and cross-border money transfers rather than just cryptocurrency trading. This geographic push puts Circle in direct competition with legacy banks and traditional remittance companies for a lucrative share of global cash flows. Circle currently manages approximately US$72.6 billion in circulating USDC, securing roughly a quarter of the global stablecoin market. SEC approves Cboe rule change for KPI-tied optionsThe US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) approved a Cboe Global Markets rule change on Tuesday (October 13) that lets the exchange list yes-or-no options tied to business figures reported by 23 US-listed companies, including crypto-linked Coinbase Global (NASDAQ:COIN), Robinhood Markets (NASDAQ:HOOD) and MARA Holdings (NASDAQ:MARA).The contracts pay out in cash based on the figure each company reports in its SEC filings. Cboe has said it plans to launch them in October, with Robinhood as the first retail broker to offer them, but listing depends on regulators approving Cboe's new clearing arm.Charles Schwab expands crypto services accessCharles Schwab (NYSE: SCHW) said all of its clients can now use Schwab Crypto, its service for buying and selling Bitcoin and Ether directly. CEO Rick Wurster said on the company's Q3 earnings call on Thursday (October 15) that Schwab is rolling out the ability to transfer crypto into Schwab accounts and will add three more coins by the end of the year.In August, Schwab named Solana, Avalanche and Chainlink as the planned additions. Data from SoSoValue reveals that these funds suffered a net loss of US$228.6 million for the week, piling on top of the US$681.1 million drained during the previous seven-day period. Over the last fortnight, investors have pulled roughly US$910 million from spot Bitcoin investment vehicles. Subsequently on Monday (October 19), cryptocurrency traders faced heightened anxiety over potential market instability following abrupt weekend price swings across Bitcoin, Ethereum, and AI-related perpetual futures. Social media channels erupted with speculative chatter regarding a potential "Black Monday" scenario, drawing historical parallels to the infamous 1987 stock market crash that occurred exactly thirty-nine years ago. Despite the intense anxiety, Bitcoin demonstrated relative resilience, holding at US$82,161 with a modest 1.4 percent weekly decline and remaining up approximately 1 percent over the past 30 days. However, the broader altcoin market suffered significant damage, with the average decline outside of Bitcoin hitting 7.5 percent across major digital assets. For Institutional products, combined weekly outflows from spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs reached US$548.5 million, pushing total October redemptions for both product lines to US$1.86 billion. JPMorgan expands JPM coin deposit token to the Ethereum NetworkWall Street banking titan JPMorgan Chase & Co. (NYSE:JPM) is expanding its USD-denominated deposit token, JPM Coin (JPMD), to the Ethereum public blockchain for its institutional client base, Bloomberg reported. Managing over US$5 trillion in assets under management, the lender selected Ethereum due to the network's established depth of onchain liquidity and existing pool of tokenized assets. JPM Coin represents commercial bank US dollar deposits held at JPMorgan, enabling corporate clients to execute real-time, 24/7 cross-border transfers. The deposit token originally debuted on the Coinbase-backed Layer-2 network Base last year before making the jump to Ethereum's mainnet. Through the expansion, JPMorgan adds a dedicated cash settlement leg to complement its existing tokenized money market funds, MONY and JLTXX, which already operate on the network. Following the announcement, Ethereum's market price rose over 1 PERCENT to reach a 24-hour high of US$2,445, accompanied by a 42 percent spike in daily trading volume.Saylor points to macro pressures, AI capital for Bitcoin weakness Strategy (NASDAQ:MSTR) Executive Chairman Michael Saylor attributed recent Bitcoin price weakness to restrictive trade policies, surging bond yields, and massive capital diversion into artificial intelligence infrastructure. Speaking at ParaFi Capital's Investor Day, Saylor argued that sudden risk-off macro shocks penalize digital assets more severely than traditional equities because "Bitcoin is pure capital." He highlighted that yield curves rising by 100 basis points alongside persistent trade disputes have tightened global liquidity conditions over the past year. Furthermore, Saylor identified the estimated US$1 trillion corporate AI buildout as a major drain on investment capital that would otherwise flow into alternative asset classes. Despite Bitcoin trading roughly 35 percent below its October 2025 all-time high of US$126,080, Saylor maintained an optimistic long-term outlook, expecting widespread bank adoption to drive the next structural bull market. He also projected that bank custody solutions will build out credit networks over the next 12 to 24 months, noting that every US$10 billion in bank credit equals roughly one year of fresh supply absorption.
