Netflix's 'Bright' casts Will Smith in dim thriller

8 years 9 months ago
"Bright" is a bloated, expensive mess, a Netflix movie with blockbuster aspirations and faerie-sized brains. Loud, derivative and thoroughly unexciting, the streaming service has thrown money at this Will Smith vehicle, and merely bought itself a whole lot of embarrassment.

Aaron Sorkin brings write stuff to gambling drama 'Molly's Game'

8 years 9 months ago
Aaron Sorkin wrote "Moneyball," which invites comparisons to "Molly's Game," the entertaining new poker-related drama that he wrote and also directed. The more apt benchmark, however, would be "Goodfellas," inasmuch as this fact-based movie, starring Jessica Chastain, provides a heavily narrated dissection of a criminal enterprise, from its build-up to its gradual unraveling.

'The Post' delivers, putting journalism in the spotlight

8 years 9 months ago
"The Post" was made for this moment, in more ways than one. Not only does Steven Spielberg's crisp retelling of the Pentagon Papers story call attention to journalism's highest calling, but Washington Post publisher Katharine Graham's heroic stand -- having been thrust into that position -- is a stirring portrait of courage during feminism's pre-Roe v. Wade era.

Christopher Plummer can't quite fix 'All the Money in the World'

8 years 9 months ago
"All the Money in the World" certainly earns points -- and merits curiosity -- for its sheer logistics, having replaced Kevin Spacey at the eleventh hour in the wake of sexual-misconduct allegations. Yet Christopher Plummer's admirable performance and the high degree of difficulty aren't enough to make director Ridley Scott's movie about the famous 1973 kidnapping feel as if it delivers a wholly satisfactory payoff.

Hugh Jackman commands center stage in 'Greatest Showman'

8 years 9 months ago
"The Greatest Showman" isn't the greatest show on Earth, but it's a pretty good one, and as an original musical for kids weaned on animation, one of those rare live-action commodities that really does invite family viewing. It's not "La La Land," despite a shared pedigree, but the movie's buoyancy does offer similar moments of gravity-defying escapism.

'Downsizing' shrinks Matt Damon in pursuit of big ideas

8 years 9 months ago
"Downsizing" is a bit too big for its britches -- a movie that wrestles with several provocative themes, then seemingly draws back from them to pursue more conventional ones. Director Alexander Payne ultimately brings it all around to a fairly satisfying place, but that's after a perplexing journey that's at times more surreal than Gulliver's adventures in Lilliput.
