Suge Knight opens up in 'American Dream/American Knightmare'

7 years 9 months ago
In a wistful moment, former rap mogul Marion "Suge" Knight muses about what might have happened if the architects of that business "were friends, instead of destroying each other." That's the inherent tragedy in "American Dream/American Knightmare," director Antoine Fuqua's documentary about Knight, which is premiering on Showtime.

'Welcome to Marwen' explores art as therapy in quirky true story

7 years 9 months ago
"Welcome to Marwen" is such an eccentric film that it wins a few points for sheer ambition, including its inventive visual scheme. The central story, however -- which is inspired by a remarkable true one -- never feels as transcendent or stirring as director/co-writer Robert Zemeckis clearly intends it to be.

7 years 10 months ago
"Cute" might sound like a tepid endorsement, but it's the quickest way to describe "Second Act," an old-fashioned star vehicle for Jennifer Lopez. 'Bumblebee' kicks Transformers into a higher gear

7 years 10 months ago
An old-fashioned girl-and-her-giant-robot story, "Bumblebee" is unexpectedly appealing, a "Transformers" prequel played at a much more modest pitch. Cleverly set in 1987 (when, incidentally, the toy-driven original animated series ended), this well-tuned vehicle leverages that nostalgia factor for all It's worth, especially in its pop-culture touchstones.
