'The Report' presents a heavy-handed look at the CIA torture program

6 years 11 months ago
"The Report" tackles a serious topic -- the CIA's use of torture after the Sept. 11 attacks, and the heroic attempt to make those practices public -- and turns it into a rather heavy-handed movie, one that nearly buckles under the weight of its own self-importance. Adam Driver leads the cast, in an Amazon release most notable for the flashbacks to what happened under the mandate to protect America.

'Ford v. Ferrari' uses star power to click on all cylinders

6 years 11 months ago
With a great cast, fascinating story and old-school studio vibe, "Ford v. Ferrari" nearly clicks on all cylinders. Length-wise, the movie takes a few laps too many, with a (perhaps unavoidable) overabundance of racing scenes. Beyond that, it's a wonderfully polished product, proving that Hollywood can still make 'em like they used to.

'The Good Liar' can't make the most of its dream Mirren-McKellen pairing

6 years 11 months ago
The world-class pairing of Helen Mirren and Ian McKellen is the only calling card that "The Good Liar" needs. Yet even these two knighted performers -- in a rare star vehicle for a pair of senior citizens -- can't elevate this adaptation of Nicholas Searle's book, which clearly wants to be twisty and Hitchcockian but never quite gets there.

'Charlie's Angels' isn't enough fun to earn its wings

6 years 11 months ago
"Charlie's Angels" has just enough fun with the premise to be tolerable, and not enough to justify a reboot that nobody really needed. This latest big-screen spin on the 1970s TV series brings playfulness and a stronger feminist streak courtesy of writer-director-co-star Elizabeth Banks, but it lacks the consistency to earn its wings.
