'The Chair' examines generational divides in a college English department

5 years 1 month ago
"The Chair" lays out an interesting exercise by examining generational divides through the prism of a college English department and the first woman of color leading it, played by Sandra Oh. Yet an exceptional cast mostly outshines the material, leaving what amounts to a mildly diverting binge with one inordinately amusing cameo baked into it.

5 years 1 month ago
"Reminiscence" evokes memories of several other movies -- "Blade Runner" and 1940s film noir foremost among them -- only pretty much all of them are significantly better than this. Hugh Jackman plays the lovestruck protagonist in a dystopian future, but too many of the points the story earns for ambition get deducted for execution in this jumble of ideas.

'In the Same Breath' digs into the Covid outbreak in China and the US

5 years 1 month ago
Deeply personal, complex and timely, "In the Same Breath" charts the initial outbreak of novel coronavirus in Wuhan, while paralleling the Chinese reaction to the outbreak with the US. Chinese-born filmmaker Nanfu Wang has created an unsettling window into the early days of the crisis and food for thought about how government, under each system, responded.

'Nine Perfect Strangers' checks in as 'The White Lotus' checks out

5 years 1 month ago
With a mini-reunion of key players from "Big Little Lies" at its core, "Nine Perfect Strangers" combines a book by Liane Moriarty with Nicole Kidman and writer-producer David E. Kelley, then surrounds them with an equally impressive cast. The series is another one of those riddles wrapped in a mystery, managing to pique interest while remaining stingy about disgorging big truths, much less little lies.
