Consumer stocks were broadly higher shortly before Wednesday's closing bell, with the SPDR Consumer Staples Select Sector ETF climbing 0.3% this afternoon while the SPDR Consumer Discretionary Select Sector ETF was posting a 1.0% gain.

Financial stocks were ending near their session highs, with the NYSE Financial Index rising 1.3% while the SPDR Financial Select Sector ETF was climbing 1.8%.

Energy stocks extended their earlier gains this afternoon, with the NYSE Energy Sector Index climbing 1.3% in late trade while the SPDR Energy Select Sector ETF was up 1.8%.
