Central Bank Digital Currencies May Drive Cash ‘Shadow Economy’ to Crypto: Reuters

5 years 8 months ago

Central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) may signal the end of physical cash and thus propel interest in cryptocurrency from the darker side of society, according to Mike Dolan, editor-at-large for finance and markets at Reuters.

“Shadow economy” participants, those who use deal mostly in hard cash, are unlikely to be drawn to using a CBDC which may make it harder to stay anonymous, Dolan argues in his column for the news agency.

Dolan suggests that even bitcoin cannot guarantee completely anonymity as coins can be traced from wallet to wallet, so it is unlikely that “legal tender tokens” could be relied on, either.

The “shadow economy,” as described by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), is an ecosystem of consumers and business owners who rely mostly on cash to avoid taxation and regulatory oversight.

This can include everything from sole traders to organized crime, and could be worth more than €2 trillion in the eurozone, nearly twice the €1.2 trillion worth of banknotes currently in circulation.

Economists argue that a CBDC should closely replicate cash, whereby digital tokens are held in private digital wallets, in order to avoid driving some users towards crypto. That option may not sit well with anti-money laundering rules, however, they noted.

Dolan further suggests that crypto’s recent explosion is partly due to an expected surge in adoption in the shadow economy, as CBDCs are developed and the decline of cash accelerates.

MicroStrategy Boosts Latest Debt-for-Bitcoin Offering to $900M

5 years 8 months ago

MicroStrategy has adjusted its latest planned convertible senior note sale to $900 million, adding $300 million to the novel debt issuance model it now semi-regularly employs in order to raise funds to, you guessed it, buy more bitcoin.

  • The business intelligence company reaffirmed Wednesday that it intends to pour the net proceeds of this debt sale into bitcoin buys, perhaps its biggest single dollar-denominated allocation yet.
  • MicroStrategy only yesterday announced the latest offering would seek to raise $600 million.
  • MSTR’s pro-bitcoin CEO Michael Saylor has mandated his company follow two distinct business models: 1) develop business intelligence software, 2) buy more bitcoin.
  • The firm has bought 70,784 bitcoin so far, an amount now worth around $3.6 billion. It projects the net proceeds of this sale to come in around $879 million.

Valid Points: How CME Ether Futures Work and Why They Matter

5 years 8 months ago

Trading in ether futures went live on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) late last Sunday with the February contract registering an opening price of $1,669.75.

In less than two weeks, the open price of the February contract has jumped 5% to $1747.75 as ether spot prices have continued to climb upwards of $1,700.

In terms of weekly trading volume, CME ether futures contracts surpassed $160 million in its first full week of trading.

Related: First Mover: What’s Next After Bitcoin Hits $50K? Another $1K Gain

According to Tim McCourt, Global Head of Equity Index and Alternative Investment Product at CME Group, the initial activity of the CME’s market for ether futures is promising but there’s still a long way to go before the product is fully established and mature enough to support other derivatives products such as options.

“We’ve done a really good job the first few days but obviously we want to see more in terms of on-screen liquidity. Right now, about five out of the eight maturities have an active market. So we want to continue to round out that term structure. … We have some work to do in terms of continuing to onboard clearing members and customers. So ether futures will certainly keep us busy for a while,” said McCourt in an interview with CoinDesk.

Ether futures aren’t new

The CME Group isn’t the first to launch an ether futures product. In 2018, digital asset trading service Crypto Facilities based in the U.K. announced the launch of its ether futures product. Last year, U.S.-based crypto derivatives platform ErisX announced the same.

What is significant about the launch of CME ether futures is that it is the first financially settled ether futures product that is also regulated in the U.S., meaning expiry of any futures contracts don’t warrant the transfer of 50 ETH to a U.S. buyer but rather an equivalent amount in dollars. Being financially settled, according to McCourt, is a feature that was in high demand from the CME’s customers.

Related: Bitcoin’s Price Volatility May Hamper Its Progress Above $50K, JPMorgan Says

“Certainly when you’re looking at financially settled futures contracts, you have the ability to avoid some of the barrier to entry around wallets [and] custody of the assets,” said McCourt in an interview with CoinDesk. “Some of the institutional clients would need different types of insurance of the [crypto] assets if they do sort out their custody solution so financially settled just makes it easier for a lot of people.”

A financially settled ether futures product relies heavily on a robust and reliable reference rate for price while also removing and abstracting away the need for interactions with Ethereum, the underlying technology behind ether.

The only impact the Ethereum blockchain could have on CME ether futures products is if its issuance schedule and technical upgrades like Eth 2.0 were to somehow impact its listing on the five major exchanges that the CME pulls data from in order to calculate its ether-dollar reference rate. (More information on the CME CF ETH-USD Reference Rate here.)

But just as Ethereum 2.0 is crucial for the technical development of Ethereum, a U.S.-regulated and financially settled ether futures market is a crucial component for the market development of ether.

Why CME ether futures matter

The launch of ether futures on the CME, the world’s largest derivatives exchange platform, is the key to bringing new institutional players to market, according to James Putra, VP of Product Strategy at TradeStation Crypto. TradeStation Crypto’s sister company, TradeStation Securities, recently began offering its clients the ability to trade CME ether futures contracts on its platform.

“There’s a lot of firms that want crypto exposure but just can’t get access to [the spot market]. So they need to interact with futures,” said Putra in an interview with CoinDesk.

Futures contracts enable the ability for traders and investors of an underlying asset to hedge against future price movements. They are also an important tool in the hands of market participants for price discovery.

“Futures give you a long-short optionality so you don’t only have to bet one side,” said Putra. “[In the spot market,] you’re pretty much limited to long only. You can just buy and hold.”

Finally, futures are a critical step in the maturation of markets that pave the way for other sophisticated products and tools for investors to leverage. Tim McCourt, Global Head of Equity Index and Alternative Investment Product at CME Group, said:

“It is critical that the futures market take root [first] and develop that robustness such that it can support [ether] options overlaid on top of the futures.”

McCourt added that the upwelling of interest and demand for an ether futures product, in his view, mirrors increasing interest in what’s being built on Ethereum, pointing to innovations and ongoing projects such as Ethereum 2.0, decentralized finance (DeFi) and stablecoins.

“Interest in [CME ether] products also follows in a congruent manner to the interest in the network that has been growing in the past year,” said McCourt.

The promise of Ethereum 2.0

On Ethereum 2.0 specifically, McCourt affirmed the benefits to scalability and energy efficiency that this new proof-of-stake network could achieve. However, like the ether futures market, he also mentioned that it would take time to see if the promise of Eth 2.0 truly comes to fruition.

Now 11 weeks into its launch, Ethereum 2.0 is secured by over 90,000 active validators each staking 32 ETH, worth roughly $55,600 at time of writing. This represents about 2.7% of the total ETH supply locked in Ethereum’s proof-of-stake network.

On average, Eth 2.0 validators are earning 0.007554 ETH/day or $13.08/day. In total, validator rewards only make up roughly 2.6% of the rewards that Ethereum miners earn daily.

India Plans Twin Taxes on Exchanges and Traders Before Passing Crypto Bill: Report

5 years 8 months ago

India is reportedly planning a short-term boost to its coffers by ensuring the nation’s cryptocurrency space is taxed before bringing in a ban on such assets.

The government is likely to impose both personal income tax (IT) and the goods and services tax (GST) on gains from trading cryptocurrencies, according to a Wednesday report from Business Standard, one of the largest English-language newspapers in India.

“Bitcoins will be categorized as financial services attracting 18% GST on fee commission collected [by exchanges] under this segment. Plus, [income tax] to be paid on the earnings from this,” a senior finance ministry official familiar with the matter said. They added that an official circular will be released soon.

According to the newspaper’s sources, authorities aim to collect both taxes for the fiscal year April 2020 to March 2021.

The news, if confirmed, is the first clarification on how the cryptocurrency industry and its users will be taxed, albeit probably briefly.

The government is also planning to introduce a cryptocurrency bill in the ongoing session of Parliament, seeking a ban on “private cryptocurrencies,” as well as the formal start of development of a digital rupee to be issued by the central bank. The bill’s contents are still unknown, and the government is yet to define the term “private cryptocurrencies.” India’s Minister of State for Finance Anurag Thakur has said that the impending bill will fill policy gaps.

While the government has not specifically declared how crypto gains should be taxed, Nischal Shetty, CEO of Binance-owned WazirX said crypto earnings are taxable like any other income and should be declared in the income tax returns. Shetty added that his exchange has been voluntarily paying GST on trading fees collected from customers.

Taxation does not necessarily imply legality, according to another source. “Let it be clear that just because income tax or GST has been charged on the transaction, it does not by itself make the transaction legitimate. Taxability and legality of transactions are independent of each other,” a senior official at the Finance Ministry recently told The Hindu BusinessLine.

In today’s report, the anonymous official said cryptocurrencies, while unregulated, have not yet been banned and taxation rules apply to all kinds of services and commodities.

World’s Oldest Central Bank Extends Digital Currency Test Till 2022

5 years 8 months ago

The world’s oldest central bank, Sweden’s Riksbank, is to extend its pilot project for a potential central bank digital currency (CBDC) for another 12 months.

According to a press release on Friday, the project, which is being carried out with assistance from professional services firm Accenture, will run until February 2022.

The Riksbank said it would continue developing a technical solution for a central bank-issued e-krona “as a complement to cash,” with the primary objective being for the bank to increase its knowledge around the technology.

Related: India Plans Twin Taxes on Exchanges and Traders Before Passing Crypto Bill: Report

For 2021, the institution will continue developing its potential digital currency offering with a focus on performance and scalability. Testing offline functions and bringing external participants into the test environment is also on the table.

The project has raised some concerns from Sweden’s commercial banking sector over the viability of a sovereign CBDC and how that would impact the entire banking system.

There is no final decision over the issuance of the e-krona despite strong lobbying from the central bank to government last year. But with traditional cash seeing falling use, even more so during the coronavirus pandemic, Sweden has been mulling a switch to the CBDC.

However, questions still remain over the digital currency’s ultimate design and underlying technology, according to Friday’s release.

Diginex Connects Crypto Exchanges and Electronic Trading Firms With New Platform

5 years 8 months ago

Crypto services firm Diginex has partnered with electronic trading firm Itiviti to let institutions trade crypto and equities under one roof. The new platform is called Diginex Access.

The firm claims it is the first crypto firm to plug into an electronic trading platform’s order management, execution management and portfolio management systems, said Diginex CEO Richard Byworth. Other firms offer just crypto portfolio management software for traditional institutions getting into crypto, Byworth said.

Itiviti users, mostly investment banks and hedge funds, can now trade crypto and crypto derivatives alongside their equities positions. The product may also increase liquidity for Diginex’s exchange, EQUOS; Diginex collects a 0.01% to 0.02% fee on trades that come through the platform.

The firm also plans to add banking technology provider FIS to the platform and already has Binance, BitMEX, Coinbase, Deribit, FTX, Gemini, Kraken, OKEx and EQUOS plugged into it.

Diginex was the first company in the crypto space to go public via a special purpose acquisition company called 8i Acquisition Corp. It was also the first crypto exchange operator to list on a traditional U.S. exchange.

Head of St Louis Fed Says Bitcoin Not a Challenge to US Dollar’s Global Dominance

5 years 8 months ago

The head of the St. Louis Federal Reserve believes bitcoin does not pose a threat to the U.S. dollar’s status as the global reserve currency.

In an interview with CNBC on Tuesday, James Bullard said the Fed’s policy focus will remain fixed on a global dollar economy “as far as the eye could see.”

“Whether the gold price goes up or down or the bitcoin price goes up or down doesn’t really affect that,” said Bullard.

Related: World’s Oldest Central Bank Extends Digital Currency Test Till 2022

Instead, the Fed’s president flagged “privately issued” cryptocurrencies, not sanctioned by the government, as being the primary issue. Bullard then drew comparisons to a time in U.S. history before the Civil War when banks issued their own notes.

“They were all trading around and they traded at different discounts to each other and people did not like it at all,” said Bullard. “I think the same thing would occur with bitcoin here.”

Specifically, Bullard’s concerns centered around a scenario where currencies could become “non-uniform” envisioning a situation where users would walk into a Starbucks paying in either bitcoin, ether or the U.S. dollar.

“That isn’t how we do this. We have a uniform currency that came in at the Civil War time,” said Bullard.

The St Louis Fed chief also noted investors are looking for a safe haven asset amid a “currency competition” as they had done for centuries, likening bitcoin to gold.

“It’d be very hard to get a private currency that’s really more like gold to play that role so I don’t think we’re going to see any changes in the future,” said Bullard.

The comments from Bullard came as bitcoin was reaching a new all-time high above $50,000, buoyed by strong institutional demand from the likes of car maker Tesla, business intelligence firm MicroStrategy and corporate investment bank BNY Mellon.

Bitcoin Hits New High Above $51K, Shrugging Off Rising Bond Yields

5 years 8 months ago

Bitcoin’s dizzying bull run is showing no signs of slowing down despite an uptick in U.S. government bond yields.

The cryptocurrency market leader set a new lifetime high of $51,348 early Wednesday, having penetrated the psychological level of $50,000 on Tuesday for the first time, according to CoinDesk 20 data. Prices have risen by 53% this month alone.

The latest move higher comes on the heels of an announcement by public listed company MicroStrategy that it plans to boost its bitcoin stash yet again. The firm announced a $600 million debt sale on Tuesday, which will fund the additional purchases. The business intelligence firm has been buying bitcoin since August 2020 and is sitting on a profit of more than $2 billion on its holdings.

Related: World’s Oldest Central Bank Extends Digital Currency Test Till 2022

According to Avi Felman, head of trading at BlockTower Capital, MicroStrategy’s announcement may have been timed to force a break above the critical level of $50,000. The firm made a similar announcement on Dec. 7, following which bitcoin crossed above the then major hurdle of $20,000.

It remains to be seen if the latest move above $50,000 is sustainable, given that U.S. bond yields are rising and pushing gold lower. Bitcoin is widely considered a hedge against inflation like gold.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note clocked a 12-month high of 1.33% early today and has risen by over 20 basis points this year. Gold is currently trading at a two-week low of $1,790 per ounce. Bitcoin, however, is showing resilience, and may come under pressure if and when real or inflation-adjusted yields rise.

As of Tuesday, the 10-year bond was yielding -1% in inflation-adjusted terms, according to data provided by the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

Related: Diginex Connects Crypto Exchanges and Electronic Trading Firms With New Platform

‘”Momentum funds who bought bitcoin as a hedge against inflation might sell if real yields rise,” Felman told CoinDesk.

Perceived store-of-value assets typically move in the opposite direction to real bond yields. For instance, gold rallied more than $600 to a record price of $2,075 in the five months to August, as the U.S. 10-year real yield fell from 0.55% to -1.08%. Bitcoin has charted a staggering rally over the past 11 months alongside a continued drop in yields.

However, yield rises may be limited, with the Federal Reserve running an open-ended bond purchasing program and inflation likely to get a lift from rising oil prices.

At press time, bitcoin is trading around $50,946, up 3.6% in 24 hours.

Kakao to Record Private Securities on Its Own Blockchain as NFTs

5 years 8 months ago

South Korean internet giant Kakao’s blockchain arm Ground X is now storing and verifying unlisted investments as nonfungible tokens (NFTs) on its public blockchain.

Unlisted investments are shares of startups that are offered to investors for purchase prior to a public offering. Since these securities are not listed on formal markets, they are traded over the counter (OTC).

South Korea’s OTC trading market is growing: the country’s OTC exchange K-OTC ended 2020 with a record-high market capitalization of over 1 trillion won ($1.1 billion) since its launch in 2014. Foreign investors can also buy and trade OTC shares in South Korea. In 2018, South Korea amended its tax laws to exempt foreign investors from capital gains taxes on transfers of both listed and unlisted stocks.

Related: World’s Oldest Central Bank Extends Digital Currency Test Till 2022

Ground X has partnered with local equity management and trading platforms like QuotaBook and Angel League that offer investors the opportunity to buy shares of promising unlisted startups or record and store ownership information.

According to an emailed press release, information about unlisted shares, including face value, number of shares and the shareholder’s name will be recorded on Klaytn, the blockchain developed by Ground X.

The record of the share is then minted as an NFT and offered to shareholders as a digital card through the digital wallet Klip, which is embedded in South Korea’s popular messaging app KakaoTalk. KakaoTalk serves around 50 million users worldwide, and Klip is available to all KakaoTalk users.

Unlisted shares are typically available to investors through internal connections at the firm offering them, but they can also be bought via dealers that make the securities available for sale. According to Inés Chun, communications manager at Ground X, Angel League is open to anybody interested in investing in unlisted companies that are offered on the platform which are managed by experienced investors.

Related: Diginex Connects Crypto Exchanges and Electronic Trading Firms With New Platform

On the contrary, investors cannot buy unlisted shares on QuotaBook, Chun said.

“Many startups in their pre-IPO stage here in Korea use QuotaBook, and the shareholders of such startups can mint their unlisted investments information as NFT cards. Or let’s say, you have unlisted shares of some startup and that company now chooses to use QuotaBook, then you can also have your NFT,” Chun told CoinDesk via an email.

In South Korea, people who buy unlisted shares can send or sell those shares to somebody else, but not through either QuotaBook or Angel League, Chun said. If shareholders want to sell a share bought on Angel League, they have to do so on the platform, he added.

“For Angel League, specifically, you can buy shares that Angel League only offers. But let’s say you’re interested in some shares that Angel League doesn’t offer, then maybe you’d have to look for some other platform,” Chun said.

According to GrowthFunders, a U.K.-based platform that offers investors the chance to buy into unlisted companies, since these shares are not listed on an open market, they are highly illiquid. This means they cannot be easily sold until a company goes public, after which the shares may be diluted.

In March 2019, Ground X raised $90 million through a private coin offering, followed shortly by the launch of the Klaytn blockchain in June of the same year. In late 2019, Binance joined Klaytn’s 24-company governance council. In November 2020, MakerDAO also joined the council.

The launch of the Klip wallet, which was scheduled for late 2019, was delayed. Klip and its token Klay, are now operational, and support the Kakao blockchain ecosystem accessible to all KakaoTalk users.

Most Finance Chiefs Still Balk at Bitcoin on the Balance Sheet: Survey

5 years 8 months ago

Bitcoin’s march onto corporate balance sheets could be hampered by the crypto’s legendary volatility, according to a survey by Gartner released Tuesday that found only 5% of business executives intended to invest in bitcoin as a corporate asset this year.

  • Eighty-four percent of polled executives (representing 77 firms) told Gartner in February they were spooked by “financial risk due to volatility of Bitcoin” when considering whether to invest in the crypto.
  • Bitcoin adoption could prove more fruitful in the long term – but not by much. By 2024 or later, 16% of polled executives said they expect their corporations to be investing in the crypto. Just 5% said the same for this year.
  • Gartner found no difference between large and small organizations, however 50% of respondents from the tech sector could not rule out eventual crypto investments.
  • The results are in line with a note Monday by Wedbush analysts, who found that while volatile nature around bitcoin would deter most public companies from investing in the next 12 to 18months, that could move “markedly higher” as more regulation and greater acceptance kick in down the road.

Cult Toy Brand Superplastic Launches NFT Collection on Nifty Gateway

5 years 8 months ago

Basketball players, pop singers and now high-end vinyl toys – lots of different groups are trying out non-fungible tokens (NFTs) on Ethereum as a new way to monetize.

Superplastic is a company that makes artistic vinyl toys for the collectibles market. It’s debuting two new figures on the Winklevoss-owned Nifty Gateway, from Guggimon and Janky, two artists with strong Instagram followings.

We might be seeing fresh interest from the non-crypto world because of the sector’s growth. NonFungible.com released its 2020 report on NFT data for 2020, finding over 220,000 active wallets in the space and counting 31,504 sellers and 74,529 buyers for the year. The data site captured $251 million in NFT trade volume.

Obviously, mainstream appeal should grow the sector further, and aiming to attract celebrities has always been part of Nifty Gateway’s strategy. Beyond social media’s newly famous, the mainstream stars are starting to get interested as well. Recently, both Lindsay Lohan and Grimes, the pop star and mother of Elon Musk’s latest child, have announced token offerings.

It might be tough to compete with analog celebrities for mindshare, but Superplastic has the advantage of a dedicated following of people who like to speculate on aesthetic goods.

Odds are some number of those fans will be persuaded to check out this whole digital art with provable provenance thing. Let’s just hope the company has a plan for preparing its followers to understand what gas fees are.

Each artist will auction one NFT each: “Electric Scream Dream” by Janky and “Well, That Was Fucking Weird!” by Guggimon. There will also be six SuperKranky figures designed together by both artists. This isn’t the first foray of a toy company into crypto or NFTs. In fact, CryptoKaiju has offered analog toys whose ownership corresponds with an ERC-721 token on Ethereum for a while now. Superplastic has no plans to connect these digital offerings with a real-world toy.

Market Wrap: Bitcoin Remains Around $48.5K Amid Flat Trading Activity

5 years 8 months ago

Bitcoin faced choppy markets for most of Tuesday after briefly trading above $50,000 for the first time during early U.S. trading hours. With some remaining bullish, other analysts and traders warned about near-term price correction.

  • Bitcoin (BTC) trading around 48,810.95 as of 21:00 UTC (4 p.m. ET). Gaining 0.39% over the previous 24 hours.
  • Bitcoin’s 24-hour range: $47,088.84-$50,584.85 (CoinDesk 20)
  • BTC between its 10-hour and 50-hour averages on the hourly chart, a sideway signal for market technicians.

Bitcoin’s trading volumes on the eight leading crypto exchanges tracked by the CoinDesk 20 remained flat on Tuesday, at roughly half of where it was on Monday on Feb. 8. Meanwhile, data from Glassnode shows that bitcoin’s balance on exchanges continues to drop, a bullish sign taken by some analysts.

“We are at all-time-highs territory [and] the market still has to make up its mind” about next resistance or supporting levels, Alessandro Andreotti, bitcoin over-the-counter broker, told CoinDesk. “My opinion is that new highs [are coming] in the short term.”

This is happening as retail investors are showing growing interest in the derivatives market.

According to Arcane Research, March futures bitcoin contracts on the retail-focused platforms currently have an annualized premium rate averaging 44.16%. That outpaces those on the institution-driven CME, which shows an average of 24.39%.

“There continues to be net inflows into crypto, particularly into futures,” Sam Bankman-Fried, CEO of crypto derivatives exchange FTX, told CoinDesk. “[And] people inside crypto continue to be particularly bullish.”

Others, however, warn about near-term price correction, especially if there is a lack of fresh catalysts on top of Tesla’s $1.5 billion bitcoin purchase that was announced last week.

Related: Kakao to Record Private Securities on Its Own Blockchain as NFTs

“The market has gone parabolic since breaking through $20,000 and technical studies are warning of the need for a healthy pullback in the days and weeks ahead to allow for severely stretched readings to unwind and normalize,” said Joel Kruger, cryptocurrency strategist at institution-focused crypto exchange LMAX Digital.

“The $50,000 price level is now relatively high for retail investors, and it is not easy for them to chase after,” Simons Chen, executive director of investment and trading at Hong Kong-based crypto lender Babel Finance, told CoinDesk. He added there was little chance retail investors will be able to push bitcoin’s price above the current record high price in the short-term period.

On its Telegram channel, Singapore-based QCP Capital also expressed a tempered view on the short-term price movement, saying that, historically, bitcoin’s price trended lower in March due to seasonality.

“The longer bitcoin stalls here without a fresh catalyst, the more we will be looking for a longer lasting downside into March. As we’ve highlighted before, the March downside seasonality followed by April upside seasonality is the strongest and most consistent seasonal pattern in bitcoin,” QCP Capital wrote. “It’s still too early now for us but into [the end of February,] if volumes drop further, we will be looking for some downside protection [at the end of March.]”

One possible spur for the markets, as CoinDesk reported, is that business intelligence firm MicroStrategy is preparing to purchase more bitcoin. As well, Los Angeles-based privately held investment firm Wedbush Securities said that bitcoin could expect more corporate ownership and adoption after Tesla’s bitcoin investment, meaning that the “fresh catalyst” QCP mentioned could still be imminent.

Ether moves little as DeFi sees small drop amid flash loan attacks

The second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, ether (ETH) was down Tuesday, trading around $1,754.31 and down 4.07% in 24 hours as of 21:00 UTC (4:00 p.m. ET).

Ether’s price has mostly stuck below $1,800 on Tuesday. This has led ether futures traders to close their positions, as what gains they’re able to eke out were eaten by the funding cost they pay for their contract, according to Vishal Shah, an options trader and founder of derivatives exchange Alpha5.

“People are now in the habit of expecting prices to climb as if it’s a foregone conclusion,” Shah said. At the same time, the decentralized finance (DeFi) sector, which is mostly based on the Ethereum blockchain, continues to grow. However, one wrinkle occurred over the past weekend when a flash loan exploit on Cream Finance and Alpha Finance caused a loss of funds totaling $37.6 million and resulting in a slight decline of the total value locked in DeFi.

Evolve Becomes Second Canadian Issuer to Win Approval for Bitcoin ETF

5 years 8 months ago

The Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) has approved Canada’s second bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF).

Evolve’s bitcoin ETF was conditionally approved on Tuesday to trade on the Toronto Stock Exchange, the company announced in a press release.

“Evolve was the first to file for a bitcoin ETF in the U.S.,” said James Seyffart, ETF research analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence. “It’s a promising sign if there are no issues with launching a bitcoin ETF in Canada. … The U.S. regulatory framework tends to be a lot more in line with things that happen in Canada.”

The approval follows the OSC’s approval of Purpose Investment’s bitcoin ETF on Thursday. Both ETFs have a management fee of 1%, falling just shy of Europe’s cheapest bitcoin exchange-traded commodity from Wisdom Tree, which charges 0.95%, Seyffart said.

ETFs are an easy way for investors who want to get exposure to bitcoin without having to hold the asset itself and without having to deal with the premiums at which bitcoin funds like Grayscale Bitcoin Trust normally trade.

Evolve has tapped CF Benchmarks as the fund’s index provider, EY as its auditor, Cidel Trust Company as its custodian, Gemini Trust Company as its sub-custodian and CIBC Mellon Global Securities Services as its fund administrator.

Bitcoin se recupera de su caída y alcanza los $50K

5 years 8 months ago

Bitcoin Mining Farms in Texas Offline From Winter Storm

5 years 8 months ago

Bitcoin mining farms in Texas have gone offline because of a massive winter storm that drained the state’s power grid.

While some mining farms have stopped operations due to power outages, others are selling electricity back to the grid at a premium, said Ethan Vera, co-founder of Luxor Tech, which is a U.S.-based crypto mining company. Most mining farms are offline, Vera said.

Due to the Texas outage, hashrate generated from Luxor’s mining pool has decreased by 40%. The majority of hashrate for the entire mining pool comes from the U.S. mining farms, Vera said.

While it is not clear what exact percentage of hashrate in the global mining pool is from Texas-based facilities, some of the largest bitcoin mining companies, such as Bitmain and Layer 1, have operations in Texas because of the state’s cheap electricity.

Crypto mining giant Bitmain built one of the world’s largest bitcoin mines in Rockdale, East Texas, in 2019. Peter Thiel-backed crypto mining company Layer1 Technologies started operating its bitcoin factories in West Texas in early 2020. Publicly traded bitcoin mining company Argo Blockchain (ARB) announced last week it intended to acquire land to build mining facilities in West Texas.

Some mining farms are taking advantage of the situation by selling local residents their unused electricity.

“Some bitcoin miners were able to capitalize on selling their unused energy back to the grid for a huge profit,” JP Baric, CEO of Texas-based crypto mining company MiningStore, said on Sunday.

Texas’ power grid has already lost a small portion of energy production over the last weekend because wind turbines were frozen and natural gas available to electric plants became scarce, according to Dan Woodfin, senior director of The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT).

By Sunday all types of energy sources, including nuclear plants, coal plants and thermal generators, were falling off the grid due to the winter storm, Woodfin said, according to a report in the Austin American Statesman.

According to TechCrunch, about 30 gigawatts worth of energy is offline, with 26 gigawatts of that from thermal energy and the remainder coming from wind sources.

The impact of the extreme weather conditions on bitcoin mining facilities goes beyond the Lone Star State. Mining farms in Kentucky have also been negatively affected by the storms.

Coinbase Opens Waitlist for Ethereum 2.0 Staking

5 years 8 months ago

Coinbase’s waitlist for Ethereum 2.0 staking is live.

Per a blog post shared with CoinDesk, Coinbase customers can now sign up to stake their ETH into the Beacon Chain smart contract, the coordinator and bridge between the old Ethereum and Ethereum 2.0, the network’s momentous migration to a proof-of-stake network.

This upgrade will do away with proof-of-work mining in favor of staking. Typically, you need 32 ETH to run a validator node for Ethereum’s new blockchain, but Coinbase will allow their users to stake any amount of ETH in their account.

Rhea Kaw, a senior product manager for Coinbase’s retail team, told CoinDesk that Coinbase users could earn up to 7.5% APR on their staked ETH, depending on the Ethereum network’s variable rate of return.

In exchange for the service, Coinbase “take[s] a commission on all rewards received, and the return rate for our customers reflects this commission,” Kaw said. Per Coinbase’s User Agreement, this staking commission is 25% of the rewards received.

In addition to the forthcoming Ethereum staking option, Coinbase users can also stake Algorand (ALGO), Cosmos (ATOM) and Tezos (XTZ) tokens.

Besides Coinbase, Kraken exchange also stakes ETH on behalf of their customers and is actively depositing ETH into Ethereum 2.0’s Beacon Chain contract. Popular web and software wallet MyEtherWallet supports in-app Eth 2.0 staking as well.

Ethereum 2.0: Ethereum’s big leap

The “Beacon Chain” – the backbone of Ethereum’s new design – went live in December and so did Ethereum 2.0’s deposit contract. To claim a stake in the new network, Ethereans can deposit legacy ETH into this contract to convert it to ETH2 (aka Beacon Chain ETH, or BETH).

Once ether is deposited into the Beacon Chain, it cannot be withdrawn directly – however, using an exchange will be one way of getting around this restriction. Kaw told CoinDesk that “initially, [Coinbase] customers will not be able to sell or send the portion of [ether] that they choose to stake. However, Coinbase is exploring avenues by which to give customers a way to trade their staked ETH very soon.”

“All [ether] will ultimately automatically migrate to ETH2 once the network has been fully updated,” Kaw concluded.

There is currently $5.5 billion worth of ether locked in the Beacon Chain deposit contract.

Blockchain Bites: Bitcoin Volatility Hasn’t Shaken Out Institutions

5 years 8 months ago
Sound bites

Purpose Investments CEO Som Seif, speaking on CoinDesk TV, said there have been measurable improvements made to the infrastructure supporting the crypto economy. In fact, he thinks it would have been a mistake three years ago if regulators had approved a bitcoin exchange-traded fund when his firm first floated an application.

“So much work has been done in the backend of this, the plumbing, to effectively allow something like this. I think the regulators are comfortable,” Seif said. Purpose is the first North American firm to release a regulated crypto ETF.

Three stories

1. Volatility hasn’t shaken institutional interest in bitcoin. Bitcoin whipsawed early this week, dropping $3,000 in early Monday trading and setting a new high above $50,000 on Tuesday.

  • In the options markets, bearish bets are consolidating around the $40,000 mark – meaning traders are not predicting an extended/sustained price drop below that figure.
  • That said, “long tech” has retaken its spot as the “most-crowded trade” in the financial markets, according to a Bank of America survey, though bitcoin is close behind.

2. Two of bitcoin’s most prominent backers, NYDIG and MicroStrategy, are doubling down on their crypto plays.

  • NYDIG, Stone Ridge Asset Management’s bitcoin spin-off firm, has filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for a bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) that would trade on the stock market, like AAPL or TSLA. (The SEC has been hesitant to approve these investible products.)
  • MicroStrategy is planning to buy as much as $690 million more bitcoin, announcing an additional wave of convertible notes. MicroStrategy’s BTC horde is worth more than $3.5 billion.

3. Ripple is unlikely to settle with the SEC according to the latest filing in the case. Previous settlement discussions that took place under the Trump administration have been disrupted, as the division directors involved have since left the SEC.

  • In December, the SEC sued Ripple over alleged violations of federal securities laws. It said the company, CEO Brad Garlinghouse and Chairman Chris Larsen sold over $1 billion in XRP to retail investors without registering the cryptocurrency as a security or seeking an exemption.

Regulatory wheel
The slow wheel of regulatory progress could be driving cryptocurrency investors underground. And it’s a global phenomenon.

In one such example, Hong Kong’s security regulator has proposed rules to limit cryptocurrency trading to professional investors and only on approved exchanges. This could drive the retail crowd towards unregulated peer-to-peer platforms, according to industry advocacy group Global Digital Finance (GDF). OKCoin, BitMEX and Coinbase are all GDF members.

“Restricting cryptocurrency trading to professional investors only is different to what we have seen in other jurisdictions such as Singapore, the U.K. and the U.S., where retail investors can buy and sell virtual assets,” said Malcolm Wright, chairman of GDF’s advisory council

A similar argument was put forward by Som Seif, founder and CEO of Purpose Investments, the firm responsible for the first approved bitcoin ETF product in North America.

Speaking on CoinDesk TV, Seif noted that investors are hungry for ways to gain crypto exposure. Reluctance by the SEC to approve a bitcoin ETF could drive interest in alternatives such as investing in MicroStrategy, a company so loaded with bitcoin it almost functions like an exposure to the asset.

“If you don’t regulate something [investors] will find a way to access it in any other way … which opens up much greater investor risk,” Seif said.

That said, the past several years has been a boon for the crypto asset substructure. Seif noted the number and quality of custodians, intermediaries and data providers that have come online, all of which serves to foster confidence among regulators.

The plumbing is in place, the investors are there. Someone just needs to turn the spigot.
