Bitcoin Startup Moon Brings the Lightning Network to All Visa E-Commerce Merchants

5 years 7 months ago

A new Bitcoin-facing startup, Moon, just launched a way for its users to buy everyday goods and services using the Lightning Network at any Visa-enabled e-commerce site based in the U.S.

Shared exclusively with CoinDesk, the startup revealed the new payment option today. The Moon browser extension’s latest feature allows its users to pay for purchases using a Visa prepaid card which they purchase on the extension using Bitcoin’s Lightning Network. Once purchased, this card is immediately used as the payment option at checkout.

Upon checking out, the user employs the Moon browser extension to instantly generate a prepaid card for the exact amount of the purchase. The browser extension generates a Lightning invoice, which the user pays from any Lightning wallet. and then they can use the card to pay for the items in their cart.

These cards can only be used once and have no fees.

Moon also integrates with Coinbase so users of both can pay for the cards directly from their Coinbase accounts onchain.

The payment solution is the latest Bitcoin startup to combine traditional payment rails with Bitcoin’s Lightning Network, a bleeding-edge technology stack that facilitates instant, low-fee transactions.

“We’ve been working with the Visa Fintech team and their network of partners to build Moon. Since the vast majority of merchants don’t accept Bitcoin payments, sending payments over the Visa network is the best option due to its ubiquity,” Moon Founder and CEO Ken Kruger told CoinDesk.

“Visa has provided us with access to the Visa network, world-class expertise and the best financial partners to bring Moon’s Bitcoin payment solution to market.”

Visa Fast Track meets bitcoin

Over the past year, Visa has been generous with this expertise and network access to help bring  Bitcoin and, more specifically, Lightning-focused business to their next phases of product development through its Fintech Fast Track program.

Notably, Visa has been involved in Jack Maller’s Strike, a Lightning Network-powered Venmo alternative which can settle cross border-payments.

The payment company has also helped Fold launch its bitcoin rewards debit card. Others like eToro and BlockFi are following suit by launching their own bitcoin rewards debit and credit cards through the program.

These products can complement each other and ultimately strengthen Bitcoin’s burgeoning payments technologies. Something like Strike, for instance, could easily be used to pay the Lightning invoice that pays for Moon’s prepaid cards.

Bitcoin Eyes Record Highs as Market Cap Bounces Back Over $1T

5 years 7 months ago

Bitcoin is marching north toward record highs once more, having shown resilience in the face of a rallying U.S. dollar in recent days.

“While many were concerned about the USD strength and a turbulent macro market, BTC has continued to break recent highs,” Matthew Dibb, COO and co-founder of Stack Funds, told CoinDesk. “We believe the risk-off correlation between these markets is slowly unwinding, and the cryptocurrency could challenge record highs.”

The Dollar Index, which tracks the greenback’s value against major currencies, jumped 1.21% last week as rising U.S. Treasury yields and losses in the stock market boosted haven demand.

Related: Taco Bell Just Sold a Collection of 5 Fast-Food-Themed NFTs

However, despite the dollar charting its biggest weekly gain since October, bitcoin jumped over 12% in the same period. The top cryptocurrency was last seen trading above $54,170, representing an 8% gain over 24 hours, and with a market capitalization that has now returned over $1 trillion, according to CoinDesk 20 data.

A convincing move above resistance at $52,666 has put within reach the record high of $58,332 hit on Feb. 22.

“There are other positive signs on the technical chart,” Patrick Heusser, head of trading at Swiss-based Crypto Finance AG, said, while drawing attention to a breakout above the Ichimoku cloud red line – a technical analysis tool used to help identify support and resistance levels and other essential information such as trend direction and momentum.

According to Heusser, the bitcoin market has witnessed positive structural changes over recent weeks that would pave the way for a more sustainable move to lifetime highs. The futures premium has dropped, alongside continuously increasing futures open interest, and spot and futures trading volumes, he told CoinDesk in a Telegram chat.

Related: US Lawmakers Introduce Bill to Clarify Crypto Regulations

Futures listed on major exchanges are trading at a considerably lower premium to spot market prices compared to the record spread seen in mid-February when bitcoin reached new highs above $58,000. The peak premium represented excess bullish leverage, which has been cleared by the pullback to sub-$50,000 seen at the end of last month.

Futures open interest, or the number of open positions, jumped to 334,328 BTC on Monday – the highest level since Feb. 19 – having dropped along with prices in the second half of February.

A rise in prices alongside an uptick in open interest is said to validate an uptrend. Meanwhile, a price drop is said to be temporary if it is accompanied by a decline in open interest. That’s what happened during bitcoin’s recent correction to $43,000.

And lastly, blockchain data shows holding sentiment remains strong as ever, with the balance held on exchanges continuing its uninterrupted decline last week with an outflow of 35,200 BTC.

Turbulence ahead?

With key events such as Federal Reserve’s rate decision due next week, Dibb foresees some price turbulence ahead of a possible breakout above $60,000.

At the Federal Reserve’s policy meeting March 16-17, Chairman Jerome Powell is expected to reaffirm his pro-stimulus stance. Traders, however, will have an ear out for his comments on rising bond yields. Powell recently refrained from sounding too worried about the turmoil in the bond market. However, an unchecked rise in yields may force him into action.

Heusser, meanwhile, has some concerns the bitcoin order books are currently skewed to the sell side. However, he remains confident these offers will be absorbed by strong inflows.

“We have seen this before, and continuous market spot buying (mainly on Coinbase) made it possible for the price to go up,” Heusser said.

The cryptocurrency may still see losses if the stock market suffers a big drawdown on a continued rise in yields, if any. Heusser, however, does not expect a drop below $47,000.

“During consolidation, we built a solid liquidity pool at around $47K, which I believe should be the local bottom until we reach a new all-time high,” he noted.

Coinbase Valuation Nears $100B Ahead of March Nasdaq Listing: Bloomberg

5 years 7 months ago

Private trading of Coinbase Global Inc. shares last week indicated a $90 billion valuation ahead of the firm’s imminent public listing, according to a report from Bloomberg on Tuesday.

Citing people familiar with the matter, the news source said shares changed hands for $350 apiece last Thursday via a Nasdaq Private Market auction.

The $90 billion figure is up $13 billion from February when shares were trading for around $303 each, as CoinDesk previously reported.

Bloomberg’s sources said some shares had reached as high as $375 apiece which would place the company value at around $100 billion – a sum previously suggested by Lex Sokolin, CoinDesk columnist and global fintech co-head at ConsenSys.

The people also suggested the auction is the last time Coinbase shares will be privately traded before the company’s public listing on Nasdaq late this month.

While not necessarily indicative of future prices, private trading can provide a point of reference for where the exchange should set the share price for investors for the listing.

Coinbase’s offering will become the first large-scale direct listing on the Nasdaq – an alternative to the initial public offering (IPO).

Next Step for Institutional DeFi? Institutional NFTs

5 years 7 months ago

The institutional appetite for decentralized finance (DeFi) is being extended to incorporate the frothy world of non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

Announced Tuesday, custody and wallet technology firm Trustology is providing support for Ethereum-based NFTs, with a view to allowing institutional investors to use these tokens as collateral, for example, within the DeFi space.

There’s currently an explosion happening in NFTs, which can be thought of as blockchain-based title deeds to a digital artifact. The trend is a carry-on from things like the original CrypoKitties phenomenon in 2017, with the technology (Ethereum’s ERC-721 token standard) later morphing its way deep into the world of digital art.

Related: Hedge fund Manager Alan Howard Leads $25M Raise for Crypto Custodian Komainu

Today, the value being conferred on everything from art to music to seminal tweets is measured in hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars. Meanwhile, institutional NFT is becoming a thing, with funds like Delphi Digital, Scalar Capital and Sfermion investing in digital collectibles.

“A couple of years back when NFTs first became popular, DeFi protocols for lending, collateralizing and pledging assets didn’t really exist,” Trustology CEO Alex Batlin said in an interview. “Now there are marketplaces to buy and sell NFT’s, marketplaces to use NFTs as collateral for loans and so on.”

Like DeFi, NFTs are normally associated with non-custodial wallets. But a collection of valuable NFT assets being managed on the behalf of a fund, for instance, would require a custody solution including rules to allow certain individuals to lend the asset or use it as collateral, said Batlin.

“When it comes to selecting a custodian of NFTs, there’s potentially the need for more functionality than simply locking these valuables away in a vault,” he said.

Related: First Insured Bitcoin Fund Opens for Southeast Asian Markets

Trustology, which was recently granted temporary Financial Conduct Authority registration, offers a range of automated transaction security controls such as co-signing, allow-lists and DeFi firewall rules.

“All this stuff is highly integrated,” said Batlin. “It’s becoming the world’s largest marketplace for financial services.”

Bitcoin’s 2021 Returns Destroy Everything on Wall Street, Goldman Sachs Says

5 years 7 months ago

Goldman Sachs, the storied Wall Street firm, didn’t start including bitcoin in its weekly ranking of global asset-class returns until late January, when the largest cryptocurrency quietly appeared atop the chart.

But since then, bitcoin‘s lead over assets from stocks to bonds, oil, banks, gold and tech stocks and the euro has widened.

As of March 4, bitcoin’s year-to-date return, at about 70%, was roughly double that for the next-closest competitor, the energy sector, at about 35%, according to Goldman Sachs’s latest “US Weekly Kickstart” report.

Related: How the NFT Boom Explains Square’s Tidal Buy

The comparisons could become even more flattering to bitcoin now that a recent bout of selling in U.S. stocks has taken the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index’s year-to-date return to roughly zero – flat on the year.

  • The recovery in oil prices and real yields has boosted year-to-date returns for cyclical sectors such as energy and financials, which are nevertheless underperforming bitcoin.
  • Crude oil and energy have a higher risk-adjusted return (sharpe ratio) than bitcoin so far this year.
  • Gold is the worst performing asset class year-to-date, as rising yields have punished traditionally defensive sectors such as consumer staples and utilities.
  • Based on prior CoinDesk reporting, bitcoin is viewed by many investors both in crypto and traditional markets as a potential inflation hedge, especially in an era where central banks around the world are pumping trillions of dollars of freshly created money into financial markets to stimulate coronavirus-racked economies. Even so, gold has lost about 10% on the year, prompting some market observers to argue that bitcoin is stealing market share from the yellow metal.
  • According to a survey, some 40% of Goldman clients have exposure to cryptocurrencies.
  • That’s the case even though, as recently as May 2020, Goldman’s money-management division argued in a presentation that cryptocurrencies were “not a suitable investments for our clients,” merely a beneficiary of a “mania” worse than the infamous run on Dutch tulips in the 1600s.

Market Wrap: Bitcoin Trades Well Above $50K, While Ether Outperforms on NFTs, July’s Upgrade

5 years 7 months ago
  • Bitcoin (BTC) trading around $51,800.08 as of 21:00 UTC (4 p.m. ET). Climbing 3.48% over the previous 24 hours.
  • Bitcoin’s 24-hour range: $49,390.18-$51.982.31 (CoinDesk 20)
  • BTC trades above its 10-hour and 50-hour averages on the hourly chart, a bullish signal for market technicians.

Bitcoin’s price in recent weeks has retreated from February’s all-time highs, declining alongside U.S. stocks as investors grew increasingly concerned rising U.S. government bond yields might prompt the Federal Reserve to tighten monetary policy, curtailing the easy-money era that has boosted risky assets from stocks to cryptocurrency.

But on Monday, bitcoin’s price climbed for a fourth straight day, even as 10-year bond yields continued their march toward 1.6%. U.S. stocks slipped.

“It is interesting to note that Treasury yields and the U.S. Dollar Index are both moving up but bitcoin, unlike previous times, is not moving inversely to them,” Andrew Tu, an executive at quantitative trading firm Efficient Frontier, told CoinDesk.

Related: Bitcoin’s 2021 Returns Destroy Everything on Wall Street, Goldman Sachs says

At the moment there’s little evidence of a surge in trading volume that might reflect a fresh jolt of market intensity. The daily volume reported by eight U.S.-focused exchanges CoinDesk tracks has remained flat, in keeping with the trend of almost two weeks.

One bullish sign continues to develop: balances of bitcoin held on exchanges have reached the lowest level since November 2018, according to data from blockchain data site Glassnode. Market analysts have interpreted the lower bitcoin balance on exchanges as a bullish sign, an indication that few traders are planning to sell out of their long positions. That could imply low chances of a major market correction in the near term.

While trading activity is relatively muted, with bitcoin holding above $50,000, some analysts are eyeing the next resistance level.

“It looks like $52,000 is the important resistance we are looking to break,” Tu said.

Others, however, warn that if bond yields and dollar strength continue to rise, the crypto market might turn weak again.

“With the U.S. rates market, we might see some choppy moves with risk-off sentiment spilling over into crypto markets,” Annabelle Huang, partner at crypto market maker Amber Group, told CoinDesk.

Huang said a near-term supporting level for bitcoin would be in the range of $40,000 to $43,000. She says past visits to those levels have been tempting enough to draw in buyers.

Ether outperforms bitcoin, market awaits Ethereum upgrade

There’s a new force in the ether market: The mania for non-fungible tokens, also known as NFTs, a fast-growing sub-sector within the crypto industry that so far has largely been built atop the Ethereum blockchain.

Ether (ETH), the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, was up on Monday, trading around $1,773.21 and climbing 7.37% in 24 hours as of 21:00 UTC (4:00 p.m. ET).

Ether has outperformed by bitcoin since reaching an all-time high above $2,000 on Feb. 19. It is currently benefiting from the eye-popping sales of non-fungible tokens (NFT) and the prospect that further growth might spur more ether demand.

The NFT craze continues this week, and with the vast majority of NFT tokens built atop the Ethereum blockchain, the ether market is attracting new bullish speculation, according to Stefan Coolican, chief financial officer of investment firm Ether Capital.

At the same time, Ethereum’s scheduled “Ethereum Improvement Proposal 1559” (EIP 1559) upgrade has gotten investor attention.

“One of the big issues at the moment from mainstream investors is their concern about transaction fees and the usability of Ethereum,” Brian Mosoff, chief executive officer at Ether Capital, told CoinDesk. He noted that a significant amount of investment in Ethereum has been focusing on scaling solutions.

Ethereum blockchain users right now pay a “gas” fee to a miner for a transaction to be included in a block. Such fees make up a substantial part of miners’ overall income, David Derhy, analyst at investment platform eToro, said in explaining EIP 1559. “However, under the new proposals, gas fees will be sent to the network instead in a new fee structure called a ‘basefee.’”

“We expect ether to break new ground above $2,000 this year, with the hard fork and the fee changes all helping to cement its position as the No. 2 crypto asset, stoking further demand,” Derhy said.

He added that ether’s price rally proves the updates are mostly welcomed by the market.

Ripple, MoneyGram to ‘Wind Down’ Partnership

5 years 7 months ago

Ripple Labs said it and MoneyGram have decided to wind down their partnership agreement.

  • This ends an agreement the two companies had put on hold in February.
  • Under terms of the agreement that was put on hold and is now ending, Ripple had been paying MoneyGram to use the XRP token in international settlement since 2019 and first engaging in a pilot agreement with the service in 2018. Since then, MoneyGram had netted $61.5 million in “market development fees” from Ripple.
  • Shares of MoneyGram dropped in after-hours trading, down 7%.
  • The agreement was put on hold after U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission sued Ripple saying XRP is an unregistered security in violation of U.S. investments law. Ripple is fighting those assertions.
  • Ripple said the two sides are “committed” to revisiting their relationship in the future.

Bitcoin’s Taproot Activation Gains Momentum From New ‘Speedy Trial’ Proposal

5 years 7 months ago

Bitcoin developers have been debating the best way to activate the Taproot upgrade for at least a year. Some are hopeful a new proposal called “Speedy Trial” might put an end to the debate, by bringing forth a solution that more developers can get behind.

Ideated by Blockstream developer Russell O’Connor and written up on the Bitcoin developer email list by technical Bitcoin writer David Harding, “Speedy Trial,” would take a quicker approach than some of the other proposals in determining if miners are ready for activation of Taproot. All of the largest mining pools have already indicatedthey plan to upgrade.

“The idea received significant discussion and seemed acceptable to several people who could not previously agree on a proposal (although this doesn’t necessarily make it their first choice),” Harding wrote on the email list.

Related: Bitcoin’s 2021 Returns Destroy Everything on Wall Street, Goldman Sachs says

Taproot is the largest upgrade Bitcoin has seen in years, and many are proposing projects on top of it. It will boost privacy and scalability, and will bring a variety of other technical benefits.

Tentative Taproot agreement

Consensus for changes to Bitcoin is hard because people from all over the world contribute to it and have different opinions about how things should work. But so far it seems like “Speedy Trial” is getting a fair amount of support.

“Seems almost everyone is on board,” developer Ben Carman tweeted.

Looking through the comments on GitHub, 100% of developers so far have responded with “ACK,” which indicates support for the proposal. Meanwhile, Bitcoin developer AJ Towns has already coded up a draft version of the activation proposal, which similarly has a long train of ACKs.

Related: How the NFT Boom Explains Square’s Tidal Buy

That said, it takes time to build consensus over such a consequential proposal. CoinDesk messaged several Bitcoin developers who have not yet voiced an opinion. Most said they had not yet had time to read the proposal. Another said he did not have an opinion yet.

‘Quickly succeed’ or ‘quickly fail’

The change itself, Taproot, isn’t being debated at all. Rather, developers are debating the best way to push through the change. No CTO or central leader is in charge of the network to impose new rules. Instead, a sizable portion of the global network needs to be prepared for the new Taproot rules.

If they aren’t prepared or if not all miners upgraded to the new software in time, there’s a chance the network could split into two.

Developers have different ideas of how to deal with this dangerous possibility. The above article goes into much more detail about the history of this debate and its potential consequences.

Speedy Trial would give miners a chance to flag if they’re ready or not – but would do so on a shorter time line than other proposals. Rather than giving miners a year to flag support as once proposed, which opponents argue is too much time, Speedy Trial gives miners three months.

Another key part of the proposal is that after this three-month lock-in, there’s a waiting period of six more months before Taproot will activate.

“The goal of Speedy Trial is to allow a Taproot activation attempt to either quickly succeed or quickly fail – without compromising safety in either case,” Harding writes.

Beyond that, the proposal shares a lot of similarities with other proposals. If 90% of Bitcoin blocks in a window of time flag readiness, this should show that roughly 90% of miners are ready. At this point, the change will be locked in.

If this 90% lock-in threshold isn’t reached in three months, however, activation fails.

“There is no mandatory activation and everyone is encouraged to try again using different activation parameters,” Harding writes. At this point, users would need to come up with a new plan.

Fed ‘Not Yet Ready to Blink’ on Inflation, Pantheon Says

5 years 7 months ago

The U.S. Federal Reserve could “remain in waiting mode” even after Friday’s bullish employment report, according to a new report from Pantheon’s Ian Shepherdson. Further, low inflation could keep the Fed on hold.

  • Report Friday from U.S. Department of Labor showing a 355,000 increase in nonfarm payrolls in February could be “just a taste of what’s to come over the next couple of months” as the coronavirus vaccine gets distributed further and the economy heats up, Shepherdson, Pantheon’s chief U.S. economist, wrote Sunday.
  • March payrolls increase could hit 1 million, Shepherdson wrote: “A smooth exit from the pandemic ought to be followed by a sustained acceleration in the numbers.”
  • “In the meantime, we think the Fed will remain in waiting mode.”
  • Minutes from January FOMC meeting did not reference any plans to change policy based on a steepening of the bond-yield curve, Shepherdson noted: “The idea of increasing the weighted average maturity of asset purchases appears not even to have been discussed at the January FOMC meeting,” Shepherdson wrote.
  • While Shepherdson didn’t reference bitcoin, the upshot is that cryptocurrency traders betting on an expansion of the Fed’s monetary stimulus might be disappointed in the near term. Some investors in both cryptocurrency circles and traditional markets say bitcoin could hold its worth if trillions of dollars of central bank money printing pushes down the value of government currencies including the U.S. dollar.
  • On Friday, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in an interview with “PBS NewsHour” that “market participants are seeing a stronger recovery,” but that she doesn’t think most investors are expecting inflation to rise above the Federal Reserve’s 2% objective anytime soon.

Bitcoin, Around $51K, Nears Upper Bound of 3-Year Price Trend

5 years 7 months ago

Bitcoin’s bull run over the past year may be showing signs of exhaustion as it pushes toward the upper bound of a three-year price channel, an analysis of chart patterns shows.

The largest cryptocurrency by market value was changing hands around $51,000 as of 16:41 coordinated universal time (11:41 a.m. ET). Bitcoin (BTC) is up 75% for the year to date.

  • Upward price channel from 2017’s high shows possible resistance for BTC around $60,000, which could cap upside.
  • A flattening of the 50-week volume weighted moving average (VWMA) would indicate a slowing long-term uptrend, similar to 2018. For now, that 50-week VWMA is climbing, currently around $22,000.
  • Traders should watch for a break below the 50-day volume weighted moving average to confirm a shift in trend.

Coinbase, Naval, Framework Ventures Back $19M Raise for a Capital-Efficient Stablecoin

5 years 7 months ago

Fei Labs, a project building a more capital-efficient decentralized stablecoin, raised $19 million from Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), Framework Ventures, Coinbase Ventures and AngelList founder Naval Ravikant, among others.

The raise, disclosed Monday, is another sign competition is heating up among issuers of stablecoins. These cryptocurrencies are designed to hold their value against some mainstream asset, usually (as in Fei’s case) the U.S. dollar.

Stablecoins play a linchpin role in the crypto ecosystem, allowing traders to quickly move fiat currency (or the next best thing) between global exchanges to take advantage of arbitrage opportunities that might disappear if they waited for a bank wire to clear. In the mushrooming decentralized finance (DeFi) sector, stablecoins are a common form of collateral for loans and other contracts.

“First, we want to be the best stablecoin in DeFi, in which we would consider DAI to be the primary competitor,” said Joey Santoro, CEO of Feil Labs, which is building the Fei protocol, and author of the white paper describing it. After that, it would challenge other stablecoins, the largest of which is Tether’s USDT, with a $37.5 billion market capitalization as of Friday.

ParaFi Capital and Variant Fund also participated in the round.

Fei’s “genesis launch” is set for March 22, when users will be able to post ETH to get FEI tokens. Early participants in the sale and in the protocol’s liquidity pools on DeFi exchange Uniswap will be incentivized with TRIBE, the project’s governance token.

Other leading stablecoins have drawbacks. MakerDAO’s DAI is over-collateralized, and requires thousands of users to manage individual vaults of their collateral. USDC and USDT are centralized and censorable. Purely algorithmic stablecoins, such as basis cash, are very strange.

Like those assets, “FEI is basically a reserve-backed stablecoin,” Santoro said. But unlike its predecessors, FEI, on the cusp of its market debut, would work through a direct incentive method.

How it works

From the white paper:

“This paper proposes a new stability mechanism called direct incentives. A direct incentive stablecoin is one in which both the trading activity and usage of the stablecoin are incentivized, where rewards and penalties drive the price towards the peg.”

In other words, FEI can give users bonuses or charge fees for making trades that help it maintain its peg to the dollar. The developers have tweaked the behavior of an ERC-20 token, which runs on the Ethereum network, so that certain transactions (to start, transactions with the liquidity pool on Uniswap) can face a tax or earn a boost, depending on whether FEI needs to shrink or grow supply.

FEI works on a straightforward transactional basis. “Users can buy FEI from the protocol, and the protocol takes those assets in reserve, which we call protocol controlled value,” Santoro explained. In other words, users don’t stake ETH, Ethereum’s native currency; they buy FEI. The asset traded belongs to the Fei protocol after the trade.

“That’s sort of where the magic of FEI is. The assets in reserve could be under-collateralized, they can be over-collateralized,” Santoro explained. Further, the assets would be deployed elsewhere, such as on the secondary market or – later – in yield-generating projects.

“If you want to get more FEI, you just buy it for a dollar [worth of something] from the protocol,” he said. There’s no debt that has to be maintained by users, as there is on MakerDAO, which generates the stablecoin DAI. The protocol would simply mint FEI as needed.

There will only ever be as much FEI as the market wants, because it will all just be bought on the market.

Exit ramp

What about when users want to sell? “You can’t directly redeem ETH from the protocol. You have to go to a secondary market,” Santoro said, but the Fei protocol will be placing the ETH it takes there anyway.

If and when the protocol allows other assets to be used for buying FEI, the decision to add those assets will be up to holders of TRIBE, the project’s governance token. “It doesn’t have to be just ETH,” Santoro said, but the developers will encourage the community to only add other decentralized assets, such as DAI or aDAI. Governance will also decide where to allocate the protocol’s assets.

“Fei Protocol is intentionally governance minimized,” Santoro said.

“We are basically trying to say, ‘What’s good about Tether and what’s good about MakerDAO?’ and take the good things,” he said. The mistakes the team wants to avoid repeating include “Tether being opaque and MakerDAO being governance-heavy and over-collateralized.”

Variant Fund’s Jesse Walden said its modest governance scope and less-weighty collateralization make FEI “more socially and financially scalable.”

If ETH plunges…

When the ETH price falls and traders want to get out of FEI, selling it on the Uniswap pool will incur some kind of burn. In other words, you won’t get quite $1.00 out of your sale of one unit of FEI on Uniswap because part of it will evaporate when you initiate the trade.

Next, the protocol can itself buy back FEI with its assets and burn the FEI. In both cases, taking supply off the market should push the price back up.

But, should neither of those strategies work, TRIBE can inflate and then buy FEI off the market as well (which is a role MKR serves in MakerDAO). This feature won’t be live at launch, but Santoro expects it will be implemented.

If FEI rises over its target on other markets, users can always go to the FEI protocol to buy more FEI at the $1 peg to take advantage of the arbitrage in the short term, boosting supply and bringing the price back in line with the peg in short order.

That said, FEI also will have certain incentivized pools, such as the ETH/FEI pool on Uniswap. When it wants to expand supply, the protocol can also mint slightly extra FEI when users trade ETH for FEI. This is a part of the direct incentivization mechanic.

Update (March 8, 18:04 UTC): Adds a16z to the list of investors who joined the round.

Ethereum 2.0 Staking Protocol StakeWise Raises $2M Ahead of Mainnet Launch

5 years 7 months ago

StakeWise, an Ethereum 2.0 staking protocol, has completed a $2 million private funding round ahead of its public launch.

  • The round was led by Greenfield One, with Collider Ventures, Gumi Cryptos, Lionschain Capital and a number of private investors also joining, according to a press release Monday.
  • “We’ve made StakeWise into a protocol where users can earn elevated yields and gain unparalleled control over their staked capital,” said StakeWise co-founder Dmitri Tsumak.
  • The investment comes as StakeWise approaches its mainnet release after a seven-month beta testing period with 1,400 participants, said the firm.
  • To encourage early adopters, it also launched a campaign allowing the first 25,000 ether deposited into its pool to be eligible for distribution of 2% of its SWISE token supply.
  • The rewards will be proportional to the amount deposited, the firm said.
  • StakeWise claims it offers advantages over other Eth 2.0 staking platforms, citing a “unique tokenomics model and commitment to give majority voting power to the community.”
