LINK, MANA Token Prices Spike as Grayscale Unveils New Trusts

5 years 7 months ago

Prices for Chainlink’s LINK token and Decentraland’s MANA shot up after the conglomerate Grayscale on disclosed plans Wednesday for new investment trusts linked to the digital assets.

Grayscale CEO Michael Sonnenshein announced the trusts on Twitter at around 13:00 UTC (9 a.m. ET), and soon afterward LINK rose 7% to above $30. Grayscale is known for its bitcoin trust, ticker GBTC, which has become one of the most common ways for new investors to bet on the cryptocurrency’s price, since the vehicle can be bought and sold in stock markets, somewhat like an exchange-traded fund. (Grayscale is a unit of Digital Currency Group, which also owns CoinDesk.)

MANA, the native token of virtual reality platform Decentraland, jumped nearly 20% to above $1. Grayscale also launched products dedicated to basic attention token (BAT), filecoin (FIL), and livepeer, powering gains in these lesser-known coins.

The new trusts could unlock the exotic digital tokens for a new breed of well-capitalized investors because Grayscale’s trusts are seen as a way of gaining exposure to cryptocurrency prices without taking on the extra procedures and risks of owning them directly.

Chainlink provides price feeds to automated, blockchain-based lending and trading platforms built using blockchain technology, collectively known as decentralized finance, or DeFi. These data “oracles” are used by smart contracts – mini computer programs running atop blockchain networks, primarily Ethereum.

Price chart analysis, however, shows LINK has yet to cross above a descending trendline, a key hurdle for traders looking for predictive patterns.

EU Regulators Warn Again on Crypto Investment Risks

5 years 7 months ago

European Union regulators have repeated warnings about the risks for cryptocurrency investors.

  • In the European Securities and Markets Authority’s (ESMA) “Trends, Risks and Vulnerabilities Report,” published Wednesday, the three bodies that make up the European Supervisory Authorities (ESAs) said some cryptocurrencies are “highly risky and speculative.”
  • There’s a risk investors could lose “all their money” in the largely unregulated market, they said.
  • The ESMA report cited “significant risks” presented by the recent all-time highs of bitcoin and other crypto assets.
  • The ESAs pointed to the “continued relevance” of their previous warnings.
  • More generally, global stablecoins remain under regulatory scrutiny even if there is positive sentiment around central bank digital currencies, the report said.
  • It also highlighted the large energy consumption of proof-of-work mechanisms like bitcoin’s, and the importance of incentivizing less resource-intensive blockchain mechanisms such as proof-of-authority.

Grayscale Offers New Trusts to Invest in 5 More Cryptos Including Filecoin, Chainlink

5 years 7 months ago

Grayscale Investments, the world’s largest digital asset manager, is digging into the world of decentralized finance (DeFi) with five new new trust offerings Wednesday, including Chainlink’s link token, Brave Browser’s brave token and MANA, the money for virtual world Decentraland.

  • The two remaining trusts will offer exposure to decentralized data storage provider Filecoin’s file (FILE) and decentralized video streaming network Livepeer (LPT). All five cryptocurrencies are up on the news. LPT is up over 100% in 24 hours, according to CoinGecko.
  • The newest Grayscale trusts follows a slate of similar products from other digital asset managers looking to draw in institutional money to the red hot DeFi market. For example, CoinShares released its DeFi Index Token last month, as did Bitwise with its Bitwise DeFi Crypto Index Fund.
  • The firm had filed for the trusts in Delaware in late January, as CoinDesk reported at the time.
  • We may soon see trusts for Aave, Cosmos, Polkadot, monero and Cardano if other filings are followed through.
  • “At any one time, we’re probably maintaining a list of what could be 30 products, could be 40 products that we’re interested in bringing to market,” Grayscale CEO Michael Sonnenshein told Bloomberg.
  • The new trusts are the firm’s first additions since 2019, and come after Grayscale assessed both potential demand and did due diligence on the underlying protocols, per the report.
  • While the five cryptocurrencies now supported for investment are not mainstream yet, Sonnenshein said many of Grayscale’s trusts “have historically been a little bit before their time.”
  • New York-based Grayscale is owned by Digital Currency Group, the parent company of CoinDesk.

UK Watchdog Bans ‘Socially Irresponsible’ Bitcoin Ad

5 years 7 months ago

The U.K. Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a bitcoin advertisement from cryptocurrency exchange Coinfloor, labelling it “socially irresponsible.”

According to an announcement by the ASA on Wednesday, the advert in the Northamptonshire Telegraph on Dec. 3 featured an elderly woman who encouraged the public to use Coinfloor to help build a bitcoin savings portfolio.

The woman, described as being 63 years old, said: “Today there is no point keeping [money] in the bank – the interest rates are insulting […] That is why when I received my pension, I put a third of it into gold, a third of it into silver and the remainder into bitcoin…”

Related: Central Bank of Ireland Expands Anti-Money Laundering Regime

The ASA said the ad was, “socially irresponsible because it suggested that purchasing bitcoin was a good or secure way to invest one’s savings or pension.”

The regulator added the complainant who challenged the advertisement said the ad targeted retirees and was “misleading” because it didn’t make clear the risks associated with investing in the cryptocurrency.

In a response to the complaint, Coinfloor said there had been a disclaimer in small print toward the bottom of the ad that stated, “Investing in cryptocurrencies involves significant risk and can result in the loss of your invested capital. You should not invest more than you can afford to lose”.

“We considered the disclaimer was insufficient to counteract the overall message of the ad that buying bitcoin represented a secure investment, and given the font size and its positioning it had not been presented clearly or prominently enough to ensure consumers were made aware of the risk of loss of capital,” said the ASA.

Coinfloor also claimed the elderly woman featured was a customer who had expressed her own views on bitcoin investing in the ad, which “did not represent Coinfloor’s view.”

The ASA upheld the complaint, saying the ad was “misleading” because it didn’t make “sufficiently clear” that bitcoin prices could go down as well as up or that the bitcoin market is unregulated in the U.K., adding it was therefore in breach of advertising rules.

The ad can no longer be used by Coinfloor. The firm was warned it needs to make clear the risks of bitcoin investment in future ads.

Bitcoin Drops 3% Ahead of Fed Meeting, Despite Bullish Chart Pattern

5 years 7 months ago

Bitcoin is nursing losses ahead of a crucial Federal Reserve policy meeting that could reveal the U.S. central bank’s plans in the wake of rising inflation expectations.

The top cryptocurrency, which is seen by many investors as a hedge against rising prices, was trading near $55,000 at press time, for a 3.3% drop on the day, based on CoinDesk 20 data. The decline upended any follow-through to Tuesday’s impressive bounce from sub-$53,500 to nearly $57,000.

“We expect the Fed to keep the borrowing costs at record lows and maintain quantitative easing,” said Joel Kruger, currency strategist at LMAX Digital. “The key focus will be on interest rate projections and whether or not an improved pandemic recovery outlook will translate to an earlier hike.”

Related: Central Bank of Ireland Expands Anti-Money Laundering Regime

With inflation expectations at a 13-year high and the economy showing signs of life, markets are pricing an early unwinding of stimulus in the form of interest rate hikes.

As per Reuters, eurodollar futures, which track short-term U.S. interest rate expectations, are now foreseeing a first rate hike by March 2023 versus late 2023 a few weeks ago. The U.S. 10-year bond yield recently rose to over 12-month highs above 1.6%.

“If the Fed pushes back against market expectations and signals no rate hike until 2024, we think such an outcome would be supportive of bitcoin,” Kruger said.

However, the cryptocurrency may face selling pressure if the central bank signals an early scaling back of stimulus, Kruger added. Investors typically buy inflation hedges when expecting rate cuts and vice versa.

Related: Is Coinbase Worth $100B?

Two-thirds of economists recently surveyed by Bloomberg expect policymakers to keep rates near zero through 2023. Besides, the market pricing of rate hikes has gone wrong in the past. While markets expected a rate increase in 12 to 18 months of the 2008 crash, the Fed delivered the first rate hike only in 2015, according to Reuters.

Aside from interest rate projections, the focus would be on Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s take on the recent rise in bond yields and the central bank’s decision on the supplementary leverage ratio (SLR), a capital-adequacy measure for banks. A looser SLR requirement theoretically allows banks to expand their balance sheets faster, which creates incremental risk but frees financing for loans to governments, businesses and households.

“The market wants the SLR extended and reassurances regarding yields. If the SLR doesn’t get extended and Powell plays rising yields down, turmoil in rates would ensue, pushing other markets down,” trader Alex Kruger tweeted.

Bitcoin fell by 20% in the last week of February, after the U.S. bond market jitters came to the forefront with the sharp rise in the 10-year bond yield.

As per technical charts, Tuesday’s low of $53,221 is now the level to defend for bitcoin bulls.

Bitcoin formed a “hammer candle” on Tuesday, signaling an end of the pullback from the record high above $61,000 and scope for another leg higher. It’s called a hammer candle because of its shape on the price chart (see above), and the pattern looks bullish.

Also read: How the Federal Reserve Might Try to Calm Inflation Fears This Week

However, the bullish setup would be invalidated if Tuesday’s low is breached. That would pave the way for a drop toward $47,000 – a strong level of support revealed by the blockchain analytics firm Glassnode via a tweet earlier this month.

Syndicate, an ‘AngelList for DeFi,’ Raises $1M Seed Round Led by IDEO CoLab Ventures

5 years 7 months ago

Decentralized investing protocol Syndicate has raised $1 million in a seed round led by IDEO CoLab Ventures to decentralize crypto investing from the ground up, according to a blog post shared with CoinDesk.

Although still in private beta, Syndicate co-founder’s Will Papper and Ian Lee described Syndicate as a social graph for the rapidly decentralizing investment economy. Both Papper and Lee were employed at IDEO prior to Syndicate.

“We have a strong hypothesis that the next frontier of decentralized finance and crypto is social networks,” Lee said in an interview with CoinDesk. “The only thing that can’t be forked is the community and we take that to the next level with the only thing that can’t be forked is the social network.”

Syndicate is already connecting aspiring founders and investors, such as for non-fungible token (NFT) projects, according to Papper. The protocol enables founders to not only raise funds but conduct on-chain governance, such as airdropping tokens, he said.

The team will use the funds for hiring more engineers as well as launching the protocol in the coming weeks.

The round was joined by Electric Capital, Delphi Ventures, CoinFund, Robot Ventures, Kleiner Perkins, DeFi Alliance and Nascent plus 18 individual investors.

Valid Points: Ethereum’s Proof-of-Stake May Happen Sooner Than You Think

5 years 7 months ago

Eth 2.0 may be coming to a computer screen near you quicker than most anticipated – including the Ethereum developers.

Last week, Vitalik Buterin released a “quick merge via fork choice change” document – a lighter version of the Executable Beacon Chain for quick deployment. While only a loose technical document, the plan ostensibly serves as a notice against any further agitation from Ethereum miners as the merge would allow Ethereum to abandon mining in a rapid fashion.

The Executable Beacon Chain is a proposal to attach Eth 1.x – which we will now refer to as Ethpow (proof-of-work Ethereum) – onto the currently running proof-of-stake Ethereum: the Beacon Chain.

Related: Bitcoin Drops 3% Ahead of Fed Meeting, Despite Bullish Chart Pattern

The proposal works by having slightly altered Ethereum software, like Geth or OpenEthereum, point its transaction flow at the Beacon Chain. Instead of miners packaging transactions into blocks, the Beacon Chain’s validators will verify and finalize transactions.

“The only change required on the ethpow side is that the client must have a communication channel with a trusted beacon node and must change its fork choice rule,” Buterin writes.

Why the rush?

A quickened transition schedule is being considered for a few reasons. One recent consideration has been rising tensions between mining parties and Ethereum developers as EIP 1559 and PoS come into focus. The former proposal is highly contested by mining parties, but has achieved enough support among developers to be included in July’s London hard fork. PoS, of course, would see mining done away with completely.

Developers, however, have the high ground in this fight. A quick merge to PoS would only require “at least one honest miner” in order to start the merge. Multiple honest mining parties pointing blocks to the Beacon Chain would entail a smooth transition, Buterin says.

Related: Syndicate, an ‘AngelList for DeFi,’ Raises $1M Seed Round Led by IDEO CoLab Ventures

A quick transition to PoS does preclude the inclusion of multiple highly touted Ethereum tech stacks, at least for the moment.

Yet, at the end of the day a transition to PoS remains the goal of Ethereum developers, as it has been since before Ethpow launched. Any transition to PoS where Ethereum doesn’t lose its top dog position as the go-to platform for decentralized apps would likely be considered a victory.

Pulse check: Validator efficiencies

If you’re new to Valid Points and the topic of Ethereum 2.0 in general, be sure to check out our 101 explainer on Eth 2.0 metrics to get up to speed about terminology used throughout this newsletter.

CoinDesk’s Eth 2.0 validator node, Zelda, is humming along perfectly, earning roughly 0.0073 ETH or $13.12 per day.

While the amount of reward earned by our Eth 2.0 validator has not changed significantly over the past few weeks, I did notice a spike in Zelda’s computer processing power and a subsequent drop in her memory usage.

According to CoinDesk’s data dashboard, Zelda’s central processing unit (CPU) usage almost doubled from around 100% to 200% on Friday, March 12, and has stayed at these heightened levels ever since.

This suggests that Zelda is consuming more electrical energy in order to perform the same tasks it did before. For context, Zelda has four CPUs it can max out before validator operations are negatively impacted. Operating at a level of 200% suggests we’re using the max computing power of two out of four CPUs.

At the same time, Zelda’s usage of random access memory (RAM), which is the component of a computer that is reserved for temporary data storage, has gone down from around 4 GB to rough 2.5 GB.

This suggests the memory capacity needed for running this Eth 2.0 validator has dropped. Zelda has up to 16GB of RAM, enough for an average desktop computer to run various applications and demanding games. For Eth 2.0 validating, we use roughly 15% of total RAM, enough for tablet devices to use.

Ethereum validator rewards vs mining rewards

It’s important to note that under a proof-of-work (PoW) consensus protocol, whereby transactions and blocks are finalized through the process of mining, the aim would be to consistently max out a computer’s processing power and optimize all unused components of hardware for increasing the probability of earning network rewards.

Under Ethereum’s proof-of-stake (PoS) consensus protocol, there’s no need to do either of these things. Despite operating below its computational capacity, Zelda still maintains an effectiveness of 100% according to beaconcha.in. This is because, unlike mining, staking isn’t about competing for rewards against other validators through greater hashpower.

All validators who keep their operations up and running are rewarded on a consistent and regular basis in the form of interest on their stake. The only way to substantially increase the amount of rewards earned on the network is to stake more wealth in 32 ETH increments. (More on the reward dynamics of Eth 2.0 validators versus Ethereum miners here.)

The Eth 2.0 network does not reward aggressive increases in computing power nor sneaky optimizations to hardware. If anything, developers of the protocol are working hard to find ways in which the computational burden of being a validator can be reduced even further and updated so that even a mobile device could one day be sufficient for securing the network.

Going back to the mysterious changes in CPU usage and RAM, it turns out a code update was released by CoinDesk Director of Engineering Spencer Beggs last Friday in preparation for Ethereum’s upcoming system-wide upgrade dubbed “Berlin.”

As an Eth 2.0 validator, Zelda’s responsibilities can only be performed by connecting to both Ethereum’s PoW and PoS networks. The upcoming upgrade to Ethereum’s PoW network required Beggs to update part of our software, which likely triggered these changes in our energy consumption and memory usage.

This code update is mandatory for all Eth 2.0 validators and must be implemented by April 14, 2021, at the latest. If you’re a validator and haven’t yet made the upgrade, you can download and install the latest software releases for Berlin here.

Bitcoin Stalls at $57K Resistance, Lower Support Around $53K

5 years 7 months ago

Bitcoin (BTC) continues to struggle after failing to hold an all-time-high around $60,000 over the weekend. On the hourly chart, resistance is around $57,000 with short-term support around $53,000.

  • Traders continue to experience limited upside intraday, with oversold moves capped around the 50-period volume weighted moving average since the March 15 selloff.
  • On the daily chart, bitcoin’s uptrend remains intact, although lower highs on the relative strength index (RSI) indicates slowing momentum.
  • “Short-term momentum remains positive, but far less so than in February,” writes Katie Stockton, managing partner of Fairlead Strategies.

From a long-term perspective, the outlook for bitcoin remains constructive, although drawdowns can be sharp and fast during the late stage of a rally, as seen in the chart below.  This suggests tighter stops should be used, especially until short-term trend signals improve.

Stellar Development Foundation Invests $750K in Nigeria Remittance Platform

5 years 7 months ago

The Stellar Development Foundation (SDF) just pumped $750,000 into Cowrie, a Nigeria-based fintech platform facilitating crypto remittance transfers.

SDF said Monday the investment, made through its Enterprise Fund, will provide Cowrie with resources to continue expanding its operations in emerging markets and further develop payment corridors between Africa and the world, with an initial focus on Nigeria.

The remittance platform, powered by Stellar, allows Nigerians in other countries to send money to their families by converting their funds to NGNT, a token backed by Nigeria’s native naira currency. The funds are transferred directly to the local bank accounts of recipients. Around $27 million has been traded on the platform since NGNT’s launch in 2018.

Related: Bitcoin Drops 3% Ahead of Fed Meeting, Despite Bullish Chart Pattern

In Nigeria, people are increasingly turning to crypto as a store of value and a vehicle for cross-border payments. But the SDF investment comes after Nigerian authorities recently banned local banks from servicing crypto firms and ordered financial institutions to close bank accounts tied to crypto platforms. Crypto platforms operating in the country, including Binance and Luno, had to shut down naira deposits and withdrawals. Cowrie halted naira transactions as well.

“Due to the ban, we decided to suspend deposits and withdrawals of NGNT for the time being. We have taken these measures to be prudent and wait for further guidance as we engage with regulators,” Gbubemi Agbeyegbe, technical director at Cowrie, told CoinDesk via an email.

According to Denelle Dixon, chief executive officer at SDF, Cowrie impressed her team by continuing to engage with Nigeria’s regulators in responding to the uncertain regulatory environment for crypto in the country.

“We are here to support them not only through this investment but also through our shared commitment to creating the right policy and regulatory frameworks for blockchain technology by fostering close collaboration and partnership between the public and private sectors,” Dixon said.

Nigeria is typically one of the world’s largest recipients of remittances. But due to the COVID-19 outbreak, remittances to Nigeria in 2020 plunged to the lowest level since 2008, prompting the government to launch a promotion to attract diaspora remittances. The naira4dollar scheme promised to give away 5 naira per U.S. dollar transferred into the country from March through May 2021.

Avant-Garde Painting to Be Sold With NFT-Backed Proof of Provenance

5 years 7 months ago

A 20th-century avant-garde artwork is being auctioned later this month, with the buyer to receive a certificate of authenticity in the form of a non-fungible token (NFT).

According to a press release shared with CoinDesk on Wednesday, the auction is for a 1926 painting titled “Abstract Composition” by Ukraine-born Wladimir Baranoff-Rossine. The sale will take place on the Mark Cuban-backed NFT marketplace Mintable, which says it has been working closely with the artist’s family as part of a series of sales of his works.

The artwork will be sold in its original frame, signed by the artist and with the NFT certificate that digitally verifies the artwork’s provenance and authenticity using blockchain technology.

BitMEX Co-Founder Arthur Hayes Offers to Surrender to US Authorities in Hawaii

5 years 7 months ago

Arthur Hayes, founder and former CEO of BitMEX, says he will surrender to U.S. authorities to face charges the cryptocurrency derivatives exchange facilitated unregistered trading and other violations.

Under a proposal sent to Judge John G. Koeltl at the Southern District of New York court on Tuesday and agreed with the U.S. in principle, Hayes would be allowed release on a $10 million personal recognizance bond secured by $1 million in cash and co-signed by his mother.

Hayes intends to surrender in Hawaii on April 6, where the local FBI office would transport him to the courthouse. He would be allowed to keep his passport and stay at his home in Singapore and have pre-approved travel to the U.S.

Related: Bitcoin Drops 3% Ahead of Fed Meeting, Despite Bullish Chart Pattern

Following his initial court appearance, Hayes would stay in Hawaii for a quarantine period, before returning to Singapore. Later in the court process, he says he would travel to New York for court appearances and meetings with lawyers.

In October, BitMEX and its co-founders Hayes, Samuel Reed and Ben Delo were charged with violating the Bank Secrecy Act and conspiracy to violate the act by the U.S. Department of Justice.

At the same time, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission alleged that BitMEX received some $11 billion in bitcoin deposits and made more than $1 billion in fees, “while conducting significant aspects of its business from the U.S. and accepting orders and funds from U.S. customers.”

Hayes and other co-founders left their executive positions at BitMEX a week later. Delo pleaded not guilty after surrendering to authorities on Monday.

Hawaiian House Dems Ask State Regulator to Reconsider Tough Rules for Crypto Firms

5 years 7 months ago

Hawaiian House Democrats are asking the state’s marketplace regulator to end restrictive laws put in place against cryptocurrency businesses almost five years ago.

Policymakers have requested that the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs reassess asset reserve requirements for crypto companies. The bill, sponsored by 10 Democrats, is currently pending before the state’s House Consumer Protection & Commerce Committee, according to a public tracker.

Under the current requirements, exchanges must hold an amount of fiat equivalent to the value of the cryptocurrencies their clients are holding.

Related: Bitcoin Drops 3% Ahead of Fed Meeting, Despite Bullish Chart Pattern

“The 2016 … law governing money transmitter businesses … subjected these companies to licensing and asset reserve requirements that were too burdensome for them to do business in Hawaii,” the bill reads.

Indeed, several exchanges including Coinbase left the state after the requirement was implemented.

“The Division of Financial Institutions’ asset reserve requirements for digital currency companies are not consistent with other states,” the bill reads. “Cryptocurrency is an evolving technology globally with much still to be explored and assessed.”

The current regulatory regime requires companies to obtain a money transmitter license if they are providing financial instruments for the sale or transaction with those in Hawaii even if the business is not physically present in the state.

The department also requests applicants that trade, transmit or custody crypto in the State meet financial statement requirements and that crypto value is not seen as a “permissible investment.”

The state’s financial regulator has taken steps to change its current regime, opening up a sandbox last year to test how exchanges might operate within Hawaii. A number of exchanges have since begun operating there in a limited capacity.

How the Federal Reserve Might Try to Calm Inflation Fears This Week

5 years 7 months ago

When Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell steps up to the podium at a virtual press conference on Wednesday to discuss the U.S. central bank’s latest thinking on monetary policy, he’ll be speaking straight to Wall Street.

Yields on U.S. 10-year Treasury notes have surged to about 1.6%, close to a one-year high, in anticipation of faster economic growth as the coronavirus vaccine rollout proceeds. Not only have some $5 trillion in economic stimulus packages swelled the U.S. government’s borrowing to record levels, investors are demanding higher returns from Treasury bonds as compensation for the risk of inflation.

Wall Street analysts are worried the higher bond yields might lead to a correction in prices for riskier assets, from stocks to bitcoin. So the question is whether Powell will allow bond yields to keep rising or if the Fed will step in to ward off any unwanted market reaction. Options range from tightening monetary policy to address the underlying inflation risk, or deploying the central bank’s money-printing machine in new ways to keep yields from rising.

“The markets don’t trust the Fed,” Claudia Sahm, a former Fed economist and current senior fellow at the Jain Family Institute. “It will be a huge test of the Fed into this year and next year. It’s the trickiest monetary policy since the Volcker Rule” deliberations on bank risk-taking that followed the 2008 financial crisis.

Fed officials have used recent speeches to float or tout the possibility of using experimental monetary policies, using names like “Operation Twist” and “yield curve control.”

It’s unlikely Powell will announce any new policy Wednesday, said Steven Kelly, a research associate at the Yale Program on Financial Stability, an initiative focused on understanding financial crises.

“It could be more moderate,” Kelly said. Fed officials could “add language to the statement saying that they’re prepared to use any tools necessary.”

It’s also unlikely the Fed would employ never-before-used monetary policy tools before increasing the size of asset purchases that are already in effect, Sahm said.

For most of the past year the Fed has been buying some $120 billion a month of U.S. Treasury bonds in an effort to stimulate the economy by keeping down yields. Bond prices move in the opposite direction from their yields, so the extra purchasing volume from the Fed helps to push down the yields, which in turn helps keeps interest rates low on everything from business loans to 30-year home mortgages.

The Fed might shift some its Treasury purchases to more heavily weight its bond purchases toward longer-term maturities, said Kathy Bostjancic, chief U.S. financial economist for Oxford Economics.

“As of December, when I calculated the average maturity of [the Fed’s] purchases, it was 7.4 years,” Bostjancic said. “So they could start to shift that outward towards 10-year, 20-year, 30-year bond purchases.”

Oxford Economics revised its GDP forecast for the U.S. from 3.2% this year to 7%, projecting the U.S. would beat China in economic growth, Bostjancic added.

Powell might have to address how prices and markets might react as the economy reheats when people start getting out and about, and when jobs are created, increasing competition for workers and driving up wages.

According to Sahm, these “pent-up demand” narratives are being “overplayed” by market commentators who see an elevated inflation risk.

She expects Federal Reserve officials’ median estimates for future inflation – contained in a revised “Summary of Economics Projections” expected to be published Wednesday – will likely come in above 2% but well below 3%.

That’s far from the double-digit inflation levels witnessed in the late 1960s and early 1970s of which some analysts have warned.

The Fed has “commented that certain parts of the market are risky and have elevated valuation such as the equity market and also commercial real estate,” Bostjancic said. “I think [the central bank] wouldn’t target that. They’re not going to try to [target] cryptocurrencies. They probably wouldn’t mind, though, if we had a moderate rise in long-term [bond] rates that was somewhat of a natural break for some of these riskier assets.”

Market Wrap: Bitcoin Stuck Near $56K, Ether Faces Short-Term Sell Pressure

  • Bitcoin (BTC) trading around $55,736.37 as of 20:00 UTC (4 p.m. ET). Sliding 1.73% over the previous 24 hours.
  • Bitcoin’s 24-hour range: $53,350.37-$56,988.34 (CoinDesk 20)

Bitcoin traded in a narrowed range as Monday’s sell-off appeared to subside and prices settled in the mid-$50,000 range for the most of Tuesday.

Monday’s decline resulted in some $1.6 billion in derivatives bets being liquidated, second only to the record level that took place on Feb. 22, according to Norwegian blockchain analytics firm Arcane Research.

“But on Feb. 22, the relative price decline in bitcoin was larger than on this Monday.” Arcane wrote Tuesday in its weekly newsletter. “The extreme liquidation levels this Monday then suggests that this time around even more traders applied higher degrees of leverage in their trades.”

Bitcoin found strong support at $54,000, blockchain data shows.

Glassnode’s UTXO Realized Price Distribution (URPD), which charts bitcoins based on the price at which they were last moved, indicates that 865,000 BTC were moved around the $54,000 to $58,000 range as of March 15, according to Arcane.

At the same time, the all-time high price above $61,000 reached on Saturday appears to have alleviated some chart-following analysts’ concerns the market might be forming a “double top.”

Double tops are an extremely bearish price chart pattern. After bitcoin pushed out new all-time highs in January and February, traders fretted over the possibility of a double top then, too, according to Annabelle Huang, partner at Hong Kong-based market maker Amber Group.

“The weekend breakthrough has lifted some of those pressures,” Huang said.

Ether seeks support below $1,300, fails to reach a new high

Ether (ETH) was down Tuesday, trading around $1,784.90 and sliding 0.28% in 24 hours as of 20:00 UTC (4:00 p.m. ET).

“Ether is currently struggling to push higher,” Arcane Research wrote. “Investors are getting impatient as the second-largest cryptocurrency hasn’t been able to surpass its all-time high from Feb. 20, while bitcoin has continued to new highs.”

Ether’s spot trading volume also has been flat, according to data from eight major spot crypto exchanges CoinDesk tracks.

The trading volume was nearly $3 billion on Feb. 20, when ether broke above $2,000 for the first time, followed by several volatile days with daily trading volume as high as around $5.4 billion. Yet, when ether was trying to eke out a new all-time high on March 13, trading volume was only about $1.6 billion.

By using the DeMarker Indicator, a charting tool that’s used to measure the demand of the underlying asset, ether “is flashing a short-term ‘sell’ signal,” said Katie Stockton, a technical analyst for Fairlead Strategies.

“A two-week consolidation phase appears likely, at the minimum,” Stockton said. And the “recent volatility has left the first key support for ether back below $1,300, dictating extra attention to risk management.”

Cardano, meanwhile, which aspires to rival Ethereum as a “smart-contract” blockchain, saw a double-digit percentage gain in the past 24 hours after the cryptocurrency exchangeCoinbase Pro announced that it would support trading in the token.
