Three Arrows-Backed ‘Lightweight’ Blockchain Mina Launches Mainnet

5 years 6 months ago

The mainnet for a blockchain that discards its own blocks is now live.

Mina, a proof-of-stake protocol designed by O(1) Labs, announced the launch of its mainnet Tuesday, according to a release shared with CoinDesk.

Self-titled as a “lightweight,” Mina has a fixed blockchain size of 22 kilobytes, which it maintains by discarding blocks as they elapse. Usually blockchains retain every block mined. Its unorthodox design employs a technology called “zk-SNARKS,” most widely known for its use by Zcash, to preserve its transaction record without saving every block.

Through its SNARK-powered applications – or “Snapps” – Mina aims to “bring new possibilities for internet privacy and data security,” said O(1) Labs CEO Evan Shaprio in a statement.

Mina boasts a long list of notable backers, including Three Arrows Capital, for whom the “lightweight” protocol is one of only four base-layer blockchain investments listed on its website, a group that also includes Bitcoin, Ethereum and Polkadot.

Mina’s backers also include Polychain, Paradigm, Coinbase Ventures, Naval Ravikant and Bixin Ventures.

Concurrent with its mainnet launch, Mina announced its partnership with CoinList for its upcoming token sale.

Ripple Touts Role for XRP in Central Bank Digital Currency White Paper

5 years 6 months ago

Ripple has pitched the XRP cryptocurrency as a way to link different central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) in a new white paper.

  • XRP, which is used in some of the company’s payment products and Ripple helps develop, could be a “neutral bridge” between different currencies, bringing speed and efficiency to the process, according to the document titled, “The Future of CBDCs.”
  • The white paper, published this week, identifies cross-border payments with CBDCs as receiving little attention from central banks, which largely target domestic use cases.
  • That’s a “short-sighted” stance, according to Ripple, which says interoperable CBDCs could bring nations a competitive advantage, allowing commercial entities to make international trades.
  • “Supporting immediate real-time foreign exchanges, as opposed to the current 3-5 day process will likely still require the need for prefunded currency accounts,” the paper states.
  • A neutral bridge currency would then be needed to support liquidity markets to allow for effective movement of value between different CBDCs.
  • Ripple looks to be pitching itself to central banks researching and developing CBDCs amid its ongoing lawsuit with the U.S. Securities and Exchanges Commission (SEC) over its allegedly illegal sales of XRP.

Teller Finance’s Mainnet Launch Puts NFTs to Work – But Not How You Expect

5 years 6 months ago

Unsecured commercial-grade lending is one step closer to making its debut in decentralized finance (DeFi).

And, in perhaps a sign of the times, it involves a non-fungible token (NFT).

Algorithmic credit risk protocol Teller Finance’s limited alpha mainnet is now live on the Ethereum blockchain following a testnet earlier this year, the startup said Tuesday. The protocol links with traditional finance player Plaid and other data providers to bring real-time credit risk info onto the blockchain. And it’s bootstrapping in a novel way – NFT liquidity provisioning.

Each “Fortune Teller” NFT token will not only depict various commissioned collectibles, but will be used for the protocol’s initial liquidity, the team said. Half of NFT sale funds will be placed into the protocol with yield paid out to NFT holders staking funds on Teller. The token will be needed in order to participate in the full alpha mainnet, which goes live April 5.

“With our NFT system, we’ve found a way to supply the protocol’s liquidity and reward our early community members while simultaneously offering a unique access mechanism for the early alpha,” Teller Finance CEO Ryan Berkun said in a statement. “Teller NFT holders will gain immediate APY benefits, and will also have access to longer-term benefits we will reveal at a later date.”

As reported by CoinDesk, Teller Finance has worked with fintech giant Plaid to integrate real-time credit scores into DeFi from over 2,000 financial services. The protocol plans on decentralizing its governance over time as data providers begin natively lending through the application, Berkun said in a Telegram message to CoinDesk.

The integration with the TradFi world is a markedly different step than other DeFi protocols also solving the credit conundrum. Lending protocol Aave, for example, released a credit delegation feature last August that relied more on cryptographic assumptions than incumbent banking systems. Berkun said Teller Finance sees Aave or other DeFi lending protocols as complements, and not competitors.

“Teller is focused on enabling credit risk assessment for DeFi,” he said. “We see ourselves becoming a protocol for other DeFi markets to launch atop or integrate. Maple Finance and Aave are partners in our eyes, who can leverage Teller to bring data based risk assessment into their markets.”

‘Thrill’ and ‘Status’ Driving Young People to Crypto Investment, Says UK Financial Watchdog

5 years 6 months ago

New research from the U.K. Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) suggests the “thrill of investing” and “status from a sense of ownership” are driving more younger people to engage in “higher-risk” investments like cryptocurrency and foreign exchange (forex).

  • The financial watchdog published its findings Tuesday, suggesting that those doing so come from a more diverse background than traditional investors.
  • “They tend to skew more towards being female, under 40 and from a BAME background,” the FCA said, referring to Black, Asian and minority ethnic, a U.K. demographic.
  • They are also more reliant on YouTube and social media platforms for investment information and are likely to be using widely available investment apps.
  • The research showed that some 59% of those investing in products like crypto admitted they may not have the means to withstand a significant financial loss.
  • The FCA also found that over four in 10 do not view “losing some money” as a risk of investing, while 78% claim to rely on “gut instinct and rules of thumb” to know when to buy and sell.
  • “The challenge, competition and novelty are more important than conventional, more functional reasons for investing like wanting to make their money work harder or save for their retirement,” the FCA concluded.
  • The regulator previously tried to tackle investment risk to retail customers by banning the sale of crypto derivatives in January.

Bitcoin’s Risk-Reward Ratio Suggests Bull Run Has Plenty of Scope to Continue

5 years 6 months ago

Despite seeing its biggest drop for a month in the last 24 hours, bitcoin‘s bull run is likely to continue.

That’s the suggestion of blockchain data showing the cryptocurrency is still an attractive bet for existing holders and prospective buyers.

Bitcoin’s “reserve risk” metric measures the risk-reward ratio of investment based on long-term holders’ confidence relative to the price at any given point of time, and is currently seen at 0.008. That’s well short of highs above 0.02 seen during the bull market frenzies of December 2017, December 2013, and June 2011, according to blockchain analytics firm Glassnode.

Related: Hut 8 Joins Foundry’s Institutional Bitcoin Mining Pool With Over 14,000 Machines

The low current level suggests confidence is still high relative to the cryptocurrency’s price. Essentially, the risk/reward is skewed attractively even after the cryptocurrency’s six-fold rally in the past 5.5 months.

“The incentive for long-term holders to sell is still relatively low when compared to past bull markets,” Jeff Rose, founder and CEO of Vailshire Capital Management, tweeted Monday. “This metric suggests the current bull market still has a long way to run in terms of price increases.”

The bullish signal is consistent with the positive picture painted by other on-chain indicators, such as the market value relative to realized value ratio.

Bitcoin’s latest bull market commenced a year ago after the reserve risk fell into the buy zone (green area) below 0.002. Since then, the cryptocurrency has charted an 11-fold rally.

Related: Bitfinex Seeks to Attract Institutional Investors With Off-Exchange Settlement

The risk-reward ratio will be deemed unattractive once the indicator hits the red zone above 0.02.

Reserve risk is calculated by dividing bitcoin’s price at any point in time by the “HODL Bank,” as detailed by Glassnode, which represents the opportunity cost of holding an asset. “Each day a coin is held, the owner defers the ability to exchange it for its cash value,” according to Glassnode.

At press time, bitcoin is trading nearly 1.2% higher on the day at $54,738, having defended support at $53,000 earlier in Tuesday, according to CoinDesk 20 data.

“We have seen roughly under $1 billion in liquidations in the past 24 hours; however, the market continues to hold its $53,000 support,” Matthew Dibb, COO, and co-founder of Stack Funds, said. “There is an expectation of a deeper pullback to $47,500 if we confidently close below [the $53,000] level.

Bitcoin Breaks Below Short-Term Uptrend, Lower Support Around $50K

Sellers were active during Asia hours, pushing bitcoin (BTC) below intraday trend support. The broader uptrend continues to slow, with lower support around $50,000 and then $42,000.

  • BTC is roughly 15% below its March high, after failing to sustain moves above $61,000.
  • Sideways trading over the past few days resulted in a 10% decline from trend line support on the four-hour chart.
  • The relative strength index (RSI) is now oversold on the four-hour chart, which could encourage minor short covering at current levels.
  • Resistance around $58,000 could limit short-term recoveries, especially as the longer-term trend continues to slow, as discussed in earlier posts.
  • “We expect the long-term uptrend to moderate as intermediate-term overbought conditions are absorbed,” said Katie Stockton, managing partner of Fairlead Strategies. “Initial support for bitcoin remains near $42,000, far enough below current levels to dictate attention to risk management for long positions.”

Crypto Exchange OKEx Korea to Close as New AML Rules Come Into Force

5 years 6 months ago

The South Korean arm of the cryptocurrency exchange OKEx has decided to shut up shop rather than attempt to navigate revised regulatory hurdles that come into effect on Thursday.

According to a report by CoinDesk Korea on Tuesday, the cryptocurrency exchange has earmarked April 7 as the last day users can withdraw their digital assets and fiat currency.

A spokesperson of the exchange told CoinDesk Korea the local currency market would become too difficult to navigate due to new anti-money laundering (AML) safeguards for cryptocurrency businesses.

“In addition to several other factors, actual profits from our Korean operation don’t add up to much, so we decided to cut our losses,” said the spokesperson.

Under the revised Financial Transaction Reports Act, virtual asset service providers (VASPs) must undergo compliance inspections and verify customer identities – something the exchange said it is unwilling to do in this case, according to the report.

The legislation also stipulates that the providers are required to file suspicious transaction reports to the Korea Financial Intelligence Unit and are answerable to the Financial Services Commission (FCS).

The new legislation provides a six-month grace period to firms engaging in services related to cryptocurrency.

“Up until now we’ve provided most of our services with fiat on-ramps, but forming a bank partnership (for real-name accounts) is realistically out of reach,” said the spokesperson.

In November 2020, the FSC began undergoing legal amendments to legislation that made it mandatory for VASPS within the country to report the names of their customers.

The move is in line with intergovernmental money-laundering watchdog the Financial Action Task Force and its request to its over 200 member nations to help them prevent money laundering.

OKEx Korea previously announced on March 18 it would cease operating in the local currency market until March 25 when the revised legislation comes into effect. It has since only been operating markets in bitcoin, ether and tether.

What Is BitClout? The Social Media Experiment Sparking Controversy on Twitter

5 years 7 months ago

Prominent users of Crypto Twitter have suddenly discovered they have another profile on a new social network called BitClout, except over there some people are buying and selling tokens representing their identities. It does not matter whether the people behind those profiles have ever touched the social network.

“The core insight behind BitClout is that if you can mix speculation and content together, you can not only get a 10x product that creates innovative ways for creators to monetize, but you also get a new business model that’s not ad-driven anymore,” BitClout’s lead creator, who goes by Diamondhands, told CoinDesk in a phone call.

BitClout is not a company. It is a proof-of-work blockchain designed for running social media. It was created by an anonymous group of developers. Backers only hold its token, BTCLT. Nevertheless, a set of prominent investors and crypto businesses have bought in.

Related: Debit Card Rewards With Bitcoin

This has been unpersuasive to many prominent members of the industry, who by and large seem to particularly object to their images and Twitter profiles being scraped and copied onto a whole other website.

BitClout is social media on a blockchain (like Hive, Steem or Cent). It also generates social tokens (like Roll or Rally), which represent actual people. Those social tokens’ supplies are controlled by automated market makers (like Uniswap or Curve), though one governed by a bonding curve that explicitly ratchets up the value as more tokens get minted.

In order to do anything on the site, users need to get their hands on BTCLT. To really trade, that means putting in BTC to get BTCLT, but there’s no way to trade it back. Buying the blockchain’s token requires using a one-way atomic swap. BTC can be sent to BitClout, but it can’t be sent back.

James Prestwich, the founder of Summa (acquired by the operators of Celo last summer), has been highly critical of BitClout – and that’s one of his key reasons.

Related: Bitcoin Price Prediction: $200K by September

“There’s no venue to sell BitClout,” Prestwich told CoinDesk in a phone call. “You can put money in but you can’t get money out.”

Diamondhands said that the platform welcomes exchange listings and bridges to other blockchains. It includes exchanges among its investors, and hopes listings should come soon.

“To me, it’s just a matter of time before everybody sees where the right side of history is,” Diamondhands said.

The tokens

According to Diamondhands, there was a pre-mine of 2 million BTCLT tokens for founders and investors. There’s technically no supply cap on BTCLT, he explained, but the cost of new emissions will become so high at some point they don’t expect any more will be purchased after the supply hits something like 19 million.

Miners securing the network will also earn BTCLT, but that’s only about 500,000 over the next few years.

In order to convince creators that this was not a project that would cut and run with BTC put into the system, BitClout sought the backing of major investors in crypto.

Diamondhands sent CoinDesk a list of investors via email, which included: Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, Social Capital, TQ Ventures, Coinbase Ventures, Winklevoss Capital, Arrington Capital, Polychain, Pantera, DCG, Huobi, Variant and others.

Diamondhands said that he and his co-creators felt like they needed those well-known names to make creators feel confident the project was real.

BitClout runs on a proof-of-work blockchain much like Bitcoin’s, but one designed to hold the text of social media posts. The BTCLT token is used as gas and will likely eventually be used in a governance process that manages the project’s BTC treasury. The code will be open-sourced on the BitClout site soon and when that happens others will be able to join permissionlessly as nodes or as miners, Diamondhands said.

CoinDesk agreed to respect pseudonymity at the start of our discussions. Diamondhands said the creators are hiding their identities in order to keep the project decentralized in spirit as well as fact.

Social media

Crypto social networks are not new, but Diamondhands argues that the key innovation with BitClout is that it emphasizes the value of the creator, not their content.

“The platforms that have existed up to today, really focus on speculating on the post as the atomic unit, rather than on the creator. And there’s a very big difference, because posts are short-term,” Diamondhands said. “That makes it not really very exciting as an asset class. Whereas if you have a creator that you can speculate on, that’s a very long-term thing that you can really invest in for a long time.”

The notion of being creative and boosting one’s value is powerful, but others see a darker side.

Lumi is a blockchain researcher who has been digging deep into BitClout since it started driving conversation last week, shortly after launch.

“People are incentivized to cancel people,” Lumi told CoinDesk in a phone call. “All you have to do is open a short position and then try to mangle someone’s reputation.”

He further objected to the qualitative experience of BitClout. Sending money to a crypto address in order to get tokens back is the same spirit and feel of the early initial coin offering rush of 2017. He doesn’t like seeing those kinds of optics return to the space, only with marquee names.

But the lure of a pre-existing pool that appears to have already accrued value could be alluring.

For creators with reserved accounts, a certain number of their tokens have been set aside for them already for whenever they choose to activate. That said, users don’t need to wait for an account to be activated in order to speculate on such tokens, which could be part of why many Crypto Twitter denizens are so uneasy about this new project.

A former CoinDesk employee who has not yet activated their BitClout account already has two dozen accounts that hold their coin.

This reporter’s profile (which has not been activated and has not sold any tokens) is shown as having a $12,000 market cap.

That’s based on the idea that 32 tokens have been minted in the set aside for the profile of @BradyDale. If anyone wanted to buy one more, it would cost them around $400, so the “market cap” assumes all 33 would fetch that price. (Each token that gets sold slightly increases the price of the next token to sell. The website then lists a market cap as if the whole supply would sell at that price.)

But, as the white paper explains:

“Buying creates coins while pushing the price up and locking money into the profile, while selling destroys coins while pushing the price down and unlocking money from the profile.”

So it seems fair to say that the market caps of the tokens are overstated, at a minimum. “This is engineered to show people paper gains very quickly so they will put in more money and buy more BitClout,” Prestwich said.

“I dont think it’s a ‘scam’ though. People use that term way too loosely,” Castle Island Ventures’ Nic Carter, who had not activated his account nor invested, told CoinDesk. “I think it’s certainly got some Ponzi-like features, but so does everything now. Every consumer app is gamified. Frequent flier miles are basically a Ponzi.”

Getting in

A user doesn’t need to be on Twitter to create an account, but to activate a reserved account, a user needs to tweet out their BitClout address. This verifies legitimate owners, Diamondhands said, but no doubt the publicity also helps.

Once an account has been activated, its owner can set a sort of tax on new token emissions if they so choose. So each time someone makes a purchase of their token that increases total supply, some portion of that would go to the person the token represents.

Celebrity accounts and various crypto denizens with preloaded accounts already will find that they also have a certain amount of their tokens set aside for them now. The amount was set proportional to their followers, according to Diamondhands. There were about 15,000 pre-loaded accounts, all based on Twitter.

If a BitClout page doesn’t have a blue check next to it, the person it represents has not actually activated on the blockchain, but the rest of their basic content from Twitter is already there.

Up to now, it has required an invitation from a user to access the website, but Diamondhands said that will change shortly. Also, a user doesn’t have to pair an account with a Twitter account. In fact, if someone wants to stay anonymous and just buy people’s tokens from a wallet, they can do that too.

“The awesome thing about BitClout is it lets you be totally anonymous, which most platforms in general don’t even allow,” Diamondhands said.

Driving demand

“What got me excited about the project is what I call ‘fundamental demand,’ which is where the creator monetizing on the platform is actually what drives the value,” Diamondhands said.

The users and their posts on BitClout are an underlying data structure that any web application can access. Sites that publish BitClout content and allow people to interact with it are nodes. With this open data structure, sites can invent new ways for creators to monetize or give people incentives to hold their tokens.

Diamondhands contends that larger objections will be worked out in time, as exchange listings come to enable people to exit positions and new nodes spin up new experiences for users. It’s also open to bridges to other chains.

“Any platform that wants to implement an atomic swap from BitClout onto their chain, that would just be such an amazing thing,” he said.

The decreased bitcoin balances on exchanges have been seen as a bullish sign – that fewer holders are preparing to take profits or dump the cryptocurrency, suggesting minimum selling pressure in the near future, as CoinDesk reported previously.

As bitcoin’s inflow to exchanges continues to decrease, it also suggests that price volatility, which has remained high, is mostly driven by “speculative demand” rather than any fundamental factors, Philip Gradwell, chief economist at blockchain analysis firm Chainalysis, wrote in his newsletter on March 19.

At press time, the oldest cryptocurrency is changing hands at $55,772.02, according to CoinDesk 20 data, down 2.98% in the past 24 hours. The sudden price drop to as low as $55,685.09 in the past few hours came after U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell Jerome Powell said cryptocurrencies are “not really useful stores of value” during a virtual panel discussion on digital banking hosted by the Bank for International Settlements.

Andreotti also argued the frenzy in non-fungible tokens (NFTs) has caused a huge distraction, especially given the heavy media coverage.

Ether moves with bitcoin; NFT, DeFi demand continues to grow

Ether (ETH) was down on Monday, trading around $1,744.03 and slipping 2.85% in 24 hours as of 20:00 UTC (4:00 p.m. ET).

The ether-to-bitcoin price ratio, currently at around 0.03, within the rough 0.02-0.04 range since late 2018, suggests ether is still largely tied with bitcoin’s price performance.

Some, however, think ether’s price will soon benefit from the rapid growth in NFTs and decentralized finance (DeFi), if it hasn’t already.

Compared with bitcoin, “ether seems to be solidifying itself as the bellwether on smart contract activity and is subject to more diverse narratives, like demand for DeFi [and] NFTs,” said Stefan Coolican, chief financial officer of investment firm Ether Capital. “It could be that ether is taking a bitcoin-like role with respect to other smart contract platform tokens and has decoupled from bitcoin in the sense of being an ‘alt’ to bitcoin.”

Coolican suggested the elevated gas prices on Ethereum (gas is the cost for miners to execute transactions) is the main reason the white-hot NFT and DeFi sectors, which both are largely based on Ethereum blockchain, have not boosted ether’s price.

The total value locked in DeFi currently stands at $43.6 billion, according to DeFi Pulse. The amount has more than doubled from the beginning of the year. NBA Top Shot, the biggest marketplace for NFTs trading, saw its trading volume double in the past 30 days, data from DappRadar shows.

It is “really tough to pinpoint one factor on Ethereum since there is so much going on,” Coolican added.

Cryptocurrency Fund Flows Decline as Bitcoin Price Trades Sideways

Cryptocurrency fund inflows declined by roughly 58% to $99 million last week. Lower investor appetite for digital asset funds could reflect uncertainty over bitcoin’s price, which recently has traded in a range between $53,000 and $61,000.

“Since the February price highs and heightened volatility, we have seen a steady decline in appetite amongst investors,” according to a report by CoinShares, a digital asset management firm.

  • “We have also seen a decline in bitcoin investment product trading volumes to $713 million per day last week, versus $1.1 billion per day for 2021,” wrote CoinShares.
  • Fund flow data also shows a regional divide. Inflows are slowing in the U.S., while Europe and Canada have sustained investor appetite.
  • Bitcoin (BTC) products received a majority of inflows last week, while ethereum (ETH) and polkadot (DOT) lagged behind.

Korean Government Approves Crypto AML Rule Set to Come Online Thursday

South Korea’s anti-money laundering safeguards for cryptocurrency businesses will come into effect Thursday after cabinet officials approved a series of amendments last week, according to the Financial Services Commission (FSC).

  • Registered Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs) must file suspicious transaction reports with the FSC, subject themselves to compliance inspections and verify their customers’ identities beginning March 25.
  • Crypto firms engaging in custody, trading, sales, exchange and digital wallet services have a six-month grace period to register with the FSC before facing potential sanctions for non-compliance beginning in late September, FSC said.
  • FSC first called for crypto-focused updates to the country’s AML framework in November 2020 in an attempt to get on track with the Financial Action Task Force’s crypto oversight regime.
  • South Korea’s National Assembly voted in favor of the update on March 5. Cabinet officials gave the law the green light on March 17.
